Situated right next to the train tracks at Croydon, your favourite train-loving little ones can give their best “choo-choos” to passing train drivers as they captain their own little locomotives at this newly refreshed train-themed playground.

Set on the corner of Queen Street and Day Terrace in West Croydon, Croydon Reserve includes two play areas, a shelter and picnic settings, bins, an electric BBQ, public toilets, a basketball backboard and hoop and perimeter fencing.

The new upgrades are part of the City of Charles Sturt 2025/26 Playground Renewals Project. While this playground is on the smaller side, the broader renewal project includes plenty of exciting upgrades, all aimed at creating “inclusive spaces” and increasing “play value”, with a focus on “climate and biodiversity” and creating a “sustainable future”.

The project will renew seven playgrounds across Athol Park, Seaton, West Croydon, Grange and Allenby Gardens.

These renewal projects are being developed with a strong focus on community participation, with feedback gathered from locals, including little ones themselves, on what they want to see in their playspaces. The council even developed an activity book for young children to fill in while gathering insight into what kids really love in a playground – a win-win if you ask us.

The activity book encouraged kids to use their imagination by drawing their dream playgrounds, as well as creating a ‘playground adventure map’ where they documented their journey across a magical playground island to help designers narrow down the true playground drawcards.

But adults got their say too. One community member who participated in the survey shared their love for the existing small-but-mighty Croydon playground, really highlighting what these playgrounds mean for the community.

“I think it’s such an asset to the area,” the community resident said.

“Sometimes when I walk past, you can hear the happiness, the joy and the togetherness of all the people there, families gathering and being together.”
