Three years after taking their last order on their cult-favourite seafood boil business, Crazy Cajun, Adelaide couple Jade and Phi are back- this time with the exact spice mix that made customers obsessed in the first place.
The pair officially launched their new product, the “Crazy Cajun Butter Seasoning” spice mix, this week, giving longtime fans the chance to recreate the iconic seafood boil at home.
Jade said the idea came after years of messages from customers asking whether the business would ever return.
“We’re always getting messages, people calling, emailing, adding us on Instagram and Facebook asking if we’re gonna come back,” she said.
The original seafood boil business launched in 2021 and quickly built a loyal following online, with around 10,000 Instagram followers at its peak. But by December 2023, the couple made the decision to shut things down to focus on starting a family while juggling full-time jobs.
“We had a really good run, but we closed in December 2023 because we wanted to start a family and we both worked full time,” Jade said.
Now with a one-year-old son and still balancing demanding careers (Jade works as a finance manager while her husband works in the family fruit and veg business), the pair weren’t necessarily planning a full return to takeaway seafood boils. But they also didn’t want the recipe people loved to disappear completely.
“We thought, why not sell this mix that we use? Because we have such a good product and people loved it,” she said.
The spice blend has been reformulated into a dry mix while keeping the same flavour profile customers already know.
“It tastes exactly like how it was before,” Jade said.
Part of the appeal, she said, is that there’s still nothing quite like it locally.
“There’s nothing really like it on the market, like a seafood boil type spice thing,” she said. “We thought it was quite unique.”
But the pair never began with the goal of creating a buissness. The couple simply loved cooking seafood boils for family gatherings before someone suggested they should start selling them.
“Every now and then we’d invite all of our family over,” Jade said.
“And and then I think, one time we did it, someone was like, you guys should sell this yourselves…. two weeks later, we started making orders.
“Then we rented a kitchen, and yeah, the rest is history”.
What followed was a fast-growing local following, built around messy seafood feasts and their signature bold flavours.
“It was such a fun thing and something different to eat and bring people together,” she said.
As for whether the original takeaway business could ever make a comeback?
“Not at the moment,” Jade laughed. “But never say never.”
