The Questions Begin Now
The Philadelphia 76ers assembled one of the NBA’s most intriguing rosters during the offseason. Making it work is now the challenging part.
Philadelphia, which completed 45-37 and had its postseason journey stop in the Eastern Conference semifinals, looks very different going into the 2026–27 season. Jaylen Brown and LeBron James joined Philadelphia as a result of Mike Gansey’s active offseason. Anfernee Simons, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and other signings bolstered an already strong group centered around Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
The Sixers have enough talent on paper to take on any team. However, titles are not won on paper. Nick Nurse will get his first serious chance to assemble Philadelphia’s new roster during training camp. Rotations must take shape, roles must be defined, and solutions to a number of crucial questions must start to emerge. As training camp draws near, these are five of the Sixers’ most pressing concerns.
Can Five Stars Share the Spotlight?
Philadelphia’s greatest asset may also be its biggest liability. Nurse has five players who can have a significant offensive impact: Embiid, Maxey, Brown, James, and Edgecombe. Four have been named to the All-NBA team at some point in their careers, and Edgecombe, who has established himself as another crucial component of Philadelphia’s future, is starting his second season.
There’s just one basketball. Because of this, one of the most important themes to keep an eye on during training camp is sacrifice. According to NBA.com’s season preview, Maxey finished second among playoff players in average time of possession, while Embiid and Brown both had usage rates of 32.5% at the end of the previous postseason. These figures show how comfortable Philadelphia’s studs are with the offense flowing through them.
James might be able to contribute to the solution. James is still one of the best facilitators in basketball at the age of 41. Last season, he averaged 7.2 assists per game, providing Philadelphia with a player who can coordinate possessions without necessarily being the main scorer.
The first hint of how the nurse intends to divide those duties should come from training camp. Philadelphia can succeed on its own without all of its stars. They are necessary for the Sixers to improve one another.
How Will the Sixers Manage Joel Embiid and LeBron James?
Embiid’s talent hasn’t always been the main issue. It is now available. NBA.com reports that during the past three seasons, the former MVP has only made 96 appearances in regular-season games. Embiid only appeared in 45 of Philadelphia’s 94 regular-season and postseason games last season.
James’s addition raises additional workload concerns. With so much quality on the roster, Philadelphia shouldn’t need to overwork a 41-year-old superstar during the regular season, even though James is still incredibly productive going into his 24th NBA season.
Because of this, it is worthwhile to see how Nurse handles both veterans from the start of camp. How dominant the roster appears in October won’t define the Sixers’ ultimate objective. When April hits, Philadelphia needs James and Embiid to be well. The Sixers stand to gain a lot when the postseason rolls around if they can use their increased depth to lessen the load on their experienced stars during the regular season.
Who Earns Nick Nurse’s Trust Off the Bench?
There was more to Philadelphia’s offseason than just star power. In order to give Nurse plenty of alternatives while building his bench, the Sixers have signed a number of guys who can compete for rotation minutes. Simons might be the most fascinating.
The 27-year-old guard gives Philadelphia another potent perimeter scorer and is anticipated to play a big bench role. Alongside the Sixers’ talents, his ability to contribute without controlling possession might be especially helpful. NBA.com reports that Simons has shot 42.7% on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers over the previous six seasons. Labaron Philon Jr., a rookie, is another.
In June’s NBA Draft, Philadelphia selected Philon with the No. 22 pick, adding another young guard to a team that already included Edgecombe and Maxey. Depending on the opponent, Nurse has more alternatives with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Justin Edwards, Dean Wade, Jabari Walker, and others.
Significant minutes won’t be given to everyone. When Philadelphia’s studs depart, training camp will start to show which players Nurse has faith in and which lineups might eventually make the postseason roster.
Can Philadelphia Build a Championship-Caliber Defense?
This roster has clear attacking potential. More testing may be necessary for defense. One of the team’s main preseason concerns, according to NBA.com’s season preview, is Philadelphia’s defense, specifically whether Nurse could employ more zone concepts to keep Embiid closer to the basket.
While Edgecombe’s athleticism offers Nurse an additional option against opposition guards and wings, Brown and Caldwell-Pope offer Philadelphia seasoned perimeter defenders.
However, those individual components are still necessary for the Sixers to work as a team. With so many new players learning to play together, communication will become even more crucial. It takes more than just collecting skilled defenders to perfect defensive rotations, transition duties, and pick-and-roll coverages. It takes time for that synergy. Philadelphia’s first extended chance to develop it is during training camp.
Does Philadelphia Have Enough Frontcourt Depth?
What happens when Embiid leaves the floor is one of the more subdued questions surrounding the Sixers. A foot sprain sustained during the winter has raised doubts regarding Adem Bona’s participation early in training camp, despite the fact that he seemed poised to contend for a crucial backup-center spot.
As a result, Philadelphia’s other frontcourt possibilities receive more attention. While Dean Wade gives Nurse more size and lineup flexibility, Ariel Hukporti joined the Sixers during the offseason. In September, Philadelphia also signed 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall.
After Embiid, the Sixers don’t necessarily need another strong center. They do require consistent minutes. If Philadelphia plans to properly monitor Embiid’s workload throughout the season, that becomes even more crucial. In order to protect the paint and maintain control over the glass, the nurse needs lineups that can endure periods without his starting center. Thus, one of the most underappreciated narratives of training camp would be Bona’s recuperation and the competition behind him.
The Real Work Begins Now
Mike Gansey has done his part. Nurse now has a group of star power, experience, youth, and depth that were uncommon during the Process era because to Philadelphia’s drastically changed roster. With the addition of Brown and James to Embiid, Maxey, and Edgecombe, Philadelphia now has a lot more lineup options than it did in previous seasons thanks to the supporting cast.
Nurse must now assemble the parts into a cohesive unit. Not every question about the Sixers will be addressed by training camp. Adversity will unavoidably force Philadelphia to adapt during the season, rotations will shift, and chemistry will take time. However, this is where the procedure starts. What this group might develop into has dominated discussions about the Sixers for months. Training camp will also provide Philadelphia with the chance to begin learning.
