Tensions escalated at the Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Telangana’s Wanaparthy district after agitated farmers protesting the stoppage of irrigation water opened the left canal regulator gates themselves and released water into the canal.
Farmers from the Jurala ayacut area, led by the CPI(M), staged a day-long protest on the left canal, demanding an immediate supply of irrigation water to protect their standing crops. The protest continued from morning until evening as the farmers pressed officials to address their concerns.
FARMERS CONFRONT OFFICIALS OVER IRRIGATION WATER
The farmers alleged that officials failed to respond to their demands during the protest. Tensions rose after officials reportedly told them that water could not be released because of low storage levels in the Jurala reservoir.
An argument subsequently broke out between the farmers and the project’s Assistant Engineer. With no immediate assurance on the release of water, the agitated farmers moved towards the left canal regulator and opened the gates themselves.
Water was then released into the canal, creating a tense situation at the project site and prompting officials to intervene.
FARMERS SAY CROPS WERE AT RISK
The protesting farmers said they were left with no option as their standing crops were at risk due to the lack of irrigation water. They also criticised the authorities for allegedly ignoring their concerns despite the protest continuing for several hours.
The farmers demanded that the Telangana government ensure adequate irrigation water supply and take immediate steps to protect crops in the Jurala ayacut area.
