Four-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar might be the most obscure yet high profile fan the Socceroos have unearthed yet.
The Slovenian cycling superstar was interviewed by SBS a day out from the race’s first stage, and revealed his surprising allegiances.
Reminded his home nation did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup this year, a playful Pogajar was asked if the “rumours” about his hopes for the Socceroos to win the tournament were true.

“Yeah, Australia all the way!” he said.
Sure, the modern day cycling legend may have been somewhat influenced in his response, but it’s surely a vote of support few saw coming.
And with his familiarity wearing the yellow jersey, a Socceroos kit would certainly not look out of place.

Pogajar is an overwhelming favourite to become a five-time Tour de France winner, with the iconic race running from July 4 to 26.
If he completes the feat, the 27-year-old would become just the fourth man to do so, and the first since 1995.

Meanwhile, the Socceroos will look to stay alive in the World Cup by beating Egypt in the round of 32 overnight.
