“When finished, Symphony Station will be a bright, modernized, and fully accessible station that all can be proud of for generations to come,” Phil Eng, general manager of the MBTA and the state’s interim transportation secretary, said.

Well… somebody’s commute just got longer.
The MBTA announced Wednesday that the Green Line Symphony station will be closed from June 6 until the summer of 2029 while it undergoes “major accessibility improvements.”
The 85-year-old station, located at the steps of Boston’s Symphony Hall, will get an MBTA makeover to make the station more accessible, the MBTA posted on their website.
The station upgrades will include four new accessible elevators, raised platforms for easier boarding, accessible bathrooms, improved wayfinding and lighting, and upgraded safety features, the MBTA said.
Entering the station currently, riders must use a series of steep stairs. Currently the station is very dimly lit.
“We know that construction and temporary closures of the station affect our riders, but when finished, Symphony Station will be a bright, modernized, and fully accessible station that all can be proud of for generations to come,” Phil Eng, general manager of the MBTA and the state’s interim transportation secretary, said in a statement.
The contract was first awarded in August 2019, and was given a $150.8 million budget for station renovation, and an additional $20 million for utilities, the T said.
The years-long project is a part of the MBTA’s $9.6 billion, five year “investment plan,” which will upgrade stations, subways, commuter rail, ferries, and modernize fare collection systems, according to the agency.
During construction, the E Green Line in both directions will bypass the station. Regular Green Line service to all other E line stations will resume as normal during this time period, the MBTA said.
Riders are encouraged to use Northeastern and Prudential stops which are a five-minute walk from the Symphony station. The Massachusetts Avenue Orange Line stop is 0.1 miles away from Symphony, the T advised.
