Jobs died on Oct. 15, 2011 — exactly 15 years ago.
Apple CEO and Founder Steve Jobs had an iconic look: a black turtleneck, Levi blue jeans, and a pair of New Balance shoes.
More specifically, Jobs flaunted the New Balance 992’s grey with white colorways. When he first introduced the iPad in 2010, he wore his signature look.
The famous photo of Jobs sitting in a black leather armchair with one leg crossed over the other is the basis of New Balance’s subtle homage to the tech innovator.
New Balance seemingly recreated the iconic shot in a promo photo for the 992 on the Brighton-based shoe company’s website: a model with a black shirt and blue jeans sitting in a black leather chair. Of course, the model is wearing the 992, with one leg crossed over the other.
The tribute on the website comes as many honor Jobs on the 15th anniversary of his death and a new version of the 992 releases this week.
The original photo was taken during an Apple keynote in January 2010 as Jobs announced Apple’s new tablet. But, according to the buyer’s guide Uncrate, Jobs first wore the shoe during his 2007 keynote to introduce the iPhone.
The 992 originally debuted in 2006 as a celebration of the brand’s centennial anniversary. New Balance kept the shoe in stock until 2010 and re-released it a decade later. Most recently, the company is scheduled to release a new colorway in collaboration with musical artist Aminé this week.
“The 992 is well known for regularly appearing on the feet of some high-profile public figures,” according to a cheeky description on the New Balance website.
Jobs received many tributes Monday, including former CEO Tim Cook and current CEO John Ternus. Jobs’ most iconic shoe brand joined in, doing so in their own poignant and subtle way.
