Ship with 24 Indian seafarers hit in alleged US Navy strike near Oman; crew safe

A fire broke out aboard an oil tanker off the coast of Oman on Monday, prompting Indian authorities to coordinate rescue and safety measures for the 24 Indian crew members on board.

India’s shipping ministry said the vessel, identified as Marivex and flagged in Madagascar, reported a fire at around 1:30 pm local time. Officials said all 24 Indian sailors aboard the tanker were safe.

“The vessel is not carrying any cargo,” Opesh Kumar Sharma, a director in the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, told a press conference.

Providing an update on the crew’s condition, Sharma said, “All Indian seafarers are presently safe. We are coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, our Indian missions abroad, the Indian Navy, and the Ministry of Defence to ensure their safety.”

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Sharma said investigations were underway and further details would be shared as information became available.
