After months of intense summer heat, the UAE is entering a seasonal transition that residents have been waiting for. Autumn in the UAE 2026 officially begins on September 23 at 4.05am, marking the autumnal equinox and the gradual shift towards cooler weather.
But don’t expect the temperature to suddenly drop on September 23.
The arrival of astronomical autumn marks the beginning of a gradual change. September will still feel distinctly warm, but mornings and evenings will slowly become more comfortable as the country moves towards October, November and eventually winter.
For residents who have spent much of the summer planning their days around air conditioning and indoor activities, the seasonal change also signals something else: outdoor UAE season is approaching.
What happens on September 23?
The start of autumn is linked to the autumnal equinox, when the Sun crosses the equator as it begins its apparent movement towards the south.
Around this period, day and night are nearly equal in length. After the equinox, nights gradually become longer while daylight becomes shorter as the UAE moves towards winter.
In 2026, the astronomical autumn season begins at precisely 4.05am UAE time on Wednesday, September 23.
It is an astronomical milestone, but for residents, the bigger question is naturally: when will it actually start feeling cooler?
UAE temperatures will take time to fall
The first weeks of autumn will still be hot.
According to information shared by Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, average temperatures at the beginning of autumn are expected to reach around 39°C during the day and 26°C at night.
That means September will continue to feel like summer in many parts of the country, particularly during the afternoon.
The change becomes more noticeable as the season progresses.
By around the beginning of November, average highs are expected to fall towards 31°C, while nighttime temperatures could reach around 18°C. Towards the end of the season, temperatures are expected to become considerably more comfortable, with highs around 25°C and lows around 13°C near the winter solstice.
So, if you’re waiting for genuinely cool UAE weather, October and especially November are likely to feel much more seasonal than late September.
October is when the transition becomes easier to notice
The move from summer to autumn in the UAE is gradual rather than dramatic.
Recent weather information indicates that September can still bring temperatures close to 40°C, while the more noticeable cooling trend develops through October. Early mornings should increasingly feel different as temperatures begin to ease.
Humidity is another part of the seasonal transition.
During the first half of autumn, higher humidity can contribute to fog and dew during the early morning hours. This can create hazier starts to the day, particularly when atmospheric conditions are favourable.
For commuters and early risers, these conditions can become one of the first visible reminders that the UAE is moving away from peak summer.
The skies will have plenty to offer
Autumn isn’t only about changing temperatures.
The season also brings opportunities for anyone interested in stargazing. Several recognisable stars and constellations become prominent in the eastern sky before dawn, including Orion, Taurus, Leo, Sirius, Canopus and the Pleiades.
Away from the bright lights of central Dubai and Abu Dhabi, clearer and darker skies can make these celestial sights easier to appreciate.
For photography enthusiasts, campers and anyone who enjoys quiet desert evenings, this makes the approaching cooler months particularly appealing.
When could rain become more likely?
The UAE’s autumn transition also brings a gradual change in atmospheric conditions.
According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan, winter clouds are expected to begin arriving around mid-October, with the chance of rainfall increasing after the middle of autumn.
That doesn’t mean rain will suddenly become a daily feature. UAE rainfall remains seasonal and variable, but the second half of autumn traditionally represents a shift towards conditions that can support more cloud and occasional rain.
For residents, it is another sign that the long summer stretch is slowly giving way to the country’s cooler season.
What autumn means for Dubai’s outdoor season
Perhaps the biggest lifestyle change brought by autumn is the return of outdoor plans.
As temperatures become more manageable, residents can gradually spend longer periods outside without having to plan everything around the hottest hours of the day.
That means the return of al fresco dining, beach days, outdoor markets, desert trips, evening walks, camping and outdoor attractions becomes increasingly practical.
Dubai’s outdoor calendar also starts becoming busier during the cooler months, with seasonal attractions, markets and events returning or expanding their schedules.
For many residents, this is the real beginning of the UAE’s most anticipated lifestyle season.
Autumn is only the beginning of the cooler months
September 23 marks an important astronomical date, but the UAE’s weather transformation will happen gradually.
The first few weeks will still bring plenty of heat, with temperatures expected to remain high during the day. By October and November, however, the difference should become increasingly noticeable, particularly in the mornings and evenings.
So while autumn in the UAE 2026 officially begins on September 23, the season residents are really waiting for will arrive step by step.
And before long, the UAE’s beaches, deserts, parks, markets and outdoor terraces will once again become the places to be.
