Janu and Sainu Somji Hedo have two children and a parakeet that yells “Mummy-Papa” at regular intervals. The family of five lives in a three-room house in Navjeevan Vasahat, a settlement of former Maoists in Murkhala village, Gadchiroli, which is one of the last Maoist-affected districts in Maharashtra.

It is 44°C, and a narrow stretch of kutcha road leads to the house whose whitewash has been fading through the sun and rain since 2019-20, the year the house was built.

Why Maoists are reversing vasectomies | Pulse Maharashtra

For the tribals of central India, picking up guns for a revolution has meant a silent cost for years. After being inducted into the Maoist movement, scores of them have had to undergo vasectomies. They have silently sacrificed their dream of a family life for an armed revolution. But, after their surrender, an operation now gives them another chance at life. We travel to Gadchiroli to understand from the surrendered Maoists what it means for them to undergo vasectomy reversal surgeries. So far, 50 men have undergone these surgeries. Specialised teams of doctors have flown in from Mumbai to conduct these camps. 36 of these surrendered Maoists now have children. They aspire to give them a good education and better future.
