SBS sets ALONE AUSTRALIA reunion after wild Arctic adventure

With just three episodes of Alone Australia season four left, five contestants are still battling the Arctic wilderness, with SBS now confirming a special reunion.

Kumi Taguchi returns to host the one-hour special, bringing the cast back together after a season that has taken the Australian version of the format into the Arctic Circle for the first time.

The move to Sápmi in Finland has been the defining feature of season four, following three seasons that have taken contestants through western Tasmania, New Zealand’s South Island and back to Tasmania’s West Coast Ranges.

This time around, ten Aussies were dropped into the Arctic wilderness to battle subzero temperatures, extreme calorie deficits, predators and the psychological toll of total Arctic darkness, with $250,000 on the line.

SBS says the reunion will feature more than 6,000 hours of footage captured during the season, with unseen moments from the Arctic, a closer look at the contestants’ shelters, bushcraft and innovations, as well as reflections on the physical and mental toll of the experience.

The special will also feature major life updates from the cast since they left the wilderness.

SBS Head of Unscripted Joseph Maxwell says the reunion will give audiences a chance to see more of what happened away from the episodes.

“The Reunion will take audiences behind the scenes with never-before-seen footage, candid new insights from the cast and some big surprises.”

There has been plenty of chatter around the season this year, with viewers weighing up the very different Arctic environment, the contestants and the survival strategies that have emerged along the way.

The move north has certainly given the series a very different look, although the restrictions and challenges of surviving in the Arctic have also prompted plenty of debate about what the change means for the format.

That comes as season four continues to pull a significant audience across both broadcast and streaming.

SBS says the season has recorded a Total TV Reach of 2.91 million and a Total TV average audience of 652,000, with 44% of viewers watching via SBS On Demand, a reminder that the overnight broadcast figures again only telling part of the story.

The season also arrived during a busy period for SBS, premiering on 15 July while the 2026 FIFA World Cup while the network took a more creator-led approach to promoting the series this year with its Alone Australia bootcamp.

As previously reported by TV Blackbox, Christian Hull, Liam Moore and Australian Survivor’s Lottie Rae were among the creators sent into the bush for the survival-inspired activation ahead of the new season.

ITV Studios Australia Chief Content Officer Beth Hart says the reunion will give the contestants a chance to reflect on an experience that pushed them well outside their comfort zones.

“There’s something fascinating about seeing these remarkable people back in the real world, reflecting on an experience that tested them physically, mentally and emotionally in ways few of us can imagine.”

With the Arctic now the biggest location the Australian series has tackled, the next question is where Alone Australia could possibly go if SBS brings it back for a fifth season.

After Tasmania, New Zealand, Tasmania again and now Finland, finding somewhere capable of taking the survival challenge to another level could be quite the challenge itself.
