Sanya medal haul puts UAE top of Arab standings

UAE ended their Asian Beach Games campaign in Sanya, China, at the top of the Arab standings and seventh overall on the medal table.

The sixth edition of the Games ran from April 22 to 30 and brought together 1,790 athletes from 45 Asian National Olympic Committees.

The UAE sent 31 athletes to compete in four sports: jiu-jitsu, sailing, beach soccer and open water swimming.

All six of the country’s medals came in jiu-jitsu, with the team winning two gold, two silver and two bronze.

The result follows another strong showing by UAE athletes at Asian level. At the Asian Youth Games in Bahrain in 2025, the UAE also led the Arab standings after winning 31 medals.

The sailing team came close to adding to the medal count in Sanya. Marwa Al Hammadi finished fourth in the girls’ ILCA 4 class, while Abdulla Al Zubaidi also placed fourth in the boys’ ILCA 4 class.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, said the sailing squad had produced a strong performance in China.

He praised coach Zouhair Lebbat, the technical staff and the athletes, and thanked the UAE Olympic Committee for its support during the Games.

“These results reflect the strength of UAE sailing and the significant progress it is making across all levels,” he said.

“They also provide an important incentive to redouble efforts and continue working with confidence and ambition towards podium finishes in future events.”

Faris Mohammed Al Mutawa, Secretary-General of the UAE Olympic Committee, said the UAE’s position among Arab nations was a sign of the country’s progress at continental events.

He also credited the support of H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Olympic Committee, and Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, Vice President of the UAE Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Executive Office.

For the UAE delegation, Sanya brought a clear return. Six medals, a top-10 overall finish, and another marker of progress against Asia’s best.
