Revolution top Rhode Island FC in local cup matchup: For the second year in a row, the Revolution faced off against Rhode Island FC in a U.S. Open Cup matchup. And for the second year in a row, the MLS side proved a little much for the Pawtucket-based USL Championship team.

A quality goal scored by New England attacking midfielder Diego Fagundez in the 51st minute put the Revolution ahead.

But thanks to a well-organized and relentless approach from Rhode Island, extra time was necessitated in the 11th minute of stoppage time when forward J.J. Williams headed home an equalizing goal:

After neither side was able to produce a decisive third goal in the game by the end of the extra time, players stepped up for penalty kicks to see which team would advance to the Round of 16.

Revolution backup goalkeeper Donovan Parisian seized the moment, saving three consecutive Rhode Island penalty kicks to win it for New England:

The game was a great showcase for the local growth of a soccer ecosystem. Not only did it feature two New England teams, but also displayed multiple generations of local talent.

Fagundez, a Leominster native (and still the youngest signing in Revolution history), was assisted on his goal by two other Homegrown Players from New England’s system. One of them, left back Peyton Miller, is the second-youngest signing in club history.

In a bizarre twist, the Revolution were actually designated as the home team despite playing in Rhode Island’s stadium on Tuesday. This was because of ongoing work at Gillette Stadium ahead of the World Cup.

The Revolution will face the winner of a Wednesday matchup between Orlando City SC and FC Naples.

Trivia: Eight players in NBA history have recorded multiple playoff games scoring at least 50 points. Three of them are currently in the postseason. One is Jayson Tatum (who has two career playoff games with at least 50 points). Can you name the other two?

(Answer at the bottom).

Hint: One of them went to Louisville for college and was drafted by the Nuggets in 2017, but was quickly traded to the Jazz. The other is the only non-U.S. player on the list, having been born in Canada.

Scores and schedules:

The Red Sox lost to the Twins 6-0 on Tuesday. The two teams play again this afternoon at 1:40 p.m.

The Celtics and Bruins are now set for the playoffs. The Celtics have a schedule but no opponent (see below), while the Bruins (currently) have an opponent but no schedule.

The Revolution defeated Rhode Island FC in a U.S. Open Cup game on penalty kicks after extra time ended 1-1.

Tonight, the Fleet face the Minnesota Frost at the Tsongas Center at 7 p.m.

On this day: In 1965, John Havlicek stole the ball in the end-of-game sequence made famous by Johnny Most’s iconic call. The Celtics triumphed over the 76ers in Game 7 to win yet another Eastern title (on their way to another NBA championship, which would be won in five games over the Lakers).

Daily highlight: NBA play-in tournament games did not disappoint on Tuesday, typified by this wild end-of-overtime sequence in the Hornets’ win over the Heat (a game that was not without controversy).
