Relief for UP residents as 10% hike order on June electricity bill paused

In a temporary yet major relief for electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh, the state electricity regulatory commission has paused the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited’s (UPPCL’s) decision to impose a surcharge on electricity bills for June.

The additional levy, under the fuel adjustment charge mechanism, would have resulted in an increase of nearly 10 per cent in electricity bills. UPPCL’s decision to impose the surcharge has been challenged by the Electricity Consumer Council before the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission.

The consumer council argued in its petition that such additional charges were in violation of rules and that they would also result in increased financial burden for crores of electricity consumers across UP.

The commission subsequently sought UPPCL’s response and directed that the 10 percent surcharge not be added to the June electricity bills until a final decision is arrived on the matter.

UPPCL had notified the surcharge in its order dated May 29. The state-owned power utility company said the move was aimed at recovering the additional costs incurred on power procurement and transmission costs, saying the decision was in accordance with existing regulations.

According to the order, the 10 percent adjustment related to March consumption would be recovered through the power bills issued in June.
