An inbound stretch of Storrow Drive and Soldiers Field Road will face nightly closures through August, beginning Tuesday night, state officials announced.

The shutdown, scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, will span from North Harvard Street in Allston along the Charles River Esplanade to Mugar Way in Boston, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

While overnight closures on the eastbound sides of both roadways have been ongoing since April 5, the project is shifting to a new seven-day-a-week schedule beginning Tuesday night.

Officials intended to start the new schedule Monday, but delayed it by 24 hours while police investigated a shooting on Memorial Drive in Cambridge, a spokesperson for MassDOT told Boston.com.

The closures will accommodate work for the first phase of the Storrow Drive tunnel maintenance project, a two-stage effort to expand the lifespan of the tunnel, officials said.

Motorists can detour from North Harvard Street via the Anderson Bridge to Memorial Drive, reentering Boston by way of the Longfellow Bridge, according to MassDOT.

Officials urge drivers to maintain reduced speeds and exercise caution when traveling through the work zones.

Work restrictions will be in place during major events at Fenway and TD Garden, including the upcoming World Cup matches and America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, MassDOT officials noted.
