Parliament Budget Session Day 6 LIVE: Union Minister Piyush Goyal speaks about India-U.S. trade deal in Rajya Sabha

Deal offers comparable advantages to both sides: Piyush Goyal on U.S- India trade deal

Union Minister Piyush Goyal says that as India progress along the path to Viksit Bharat, it will need to enhance strength in sectors like data centres, renewable energy, nuclear energy and aviation, in which America is a leader. He asserts that the trade deal will allow both sides to benefit and help India progress.

Opposition members shout after the minister’s speech concludes. The Chair C.P Radhakrishnan refers to rule 251 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States, which permits a minister to make a statement on a matter of urgent public importance, with a stipulation that no questions be asked. He says that the statement made by the minister pertains to a critical issue of international economic relations, and asks the members to recognise the gravity of the matter and the broader national interest involved. He urges them to extend their full co-operation by maintaining decorum in the House.

Members continue protesting as the Chair speaks about rules pertaining to authentication of reports laid on the table of the House.

DMK MP Tiruchi Siva raises a point of order asking why the minister made a statement outside of the House, and why this statement was made now when the discussion on motion for vote of thanks on President’s speech was progressing smoothly.
