Oscar Piastri unleashed a furious tirade over team radio during today’s Hungarian Grand Prix, branding Carlos Sainz an “idiot” after a collision with the Williams driver while attempting to pass backmarkers robbed him of the race lead.
“Is he f***ing stupid or what?” Piastri raged. “Get out of the f**** way, you idiot! Oh my god.”
The 25-year-old Australian had controlled much of the race at the Hungaroring after seizing first position from teammate Lando Norris on the opening lap.
However, his afternoon fell apart spectacularly following his second pit stop when contact with Sainz on lap 38 cost him crucial time.

The delay allowed Norris to leapfrog his teammate through the pit sequence and ultimately cruise to his maiden victory of the 2026 campaign.
Piastri had surrendered the lead to enter the pits on lap 32, rejoining the circuit with backmarkers blocking his path. Six laps later, as he approached turn two, he found Sainz locked in a battle with fellow backmarker Fernando Alonso.
Blue flags were being waved to instruct both slower cars to yield, but Sainz appeared not to register Piastri’s presence behind him. The Spaniard moved wide before cutting back across the track, where his Williams’s rear-left wheel struck the front-right of Piastri’s McLaren.
The contact forced Piastri onto the grass, costing him significant time. Though no visible damage was sustained by the McLaren, the hold-up proved decisive — Norris pitted shortly afterwards and emerged ahead of his teammate, seizing the net lead of the race.
Piastri’s fury was not reserved solely for Sainz. He turned on his own team, lashing out at race engineer Tom Stallard when the latter attempted to offer consolation.
“Oh mate, just don’t even f***ing talk to me,” Piastri snapped, before adding a pointed dig at McLaren’s pit wall: “Nice of you guys to factor that one in, by the way. Thanks.”

The sarcastic rebuke made clear Piastri held his strategists partly responsible for sending him into traffic at such a critical juncture.
Sainz, meanwhile, was handed a five-second time penalty by the stewards for failing to respect blue flags. Given that the Spaniard had been scrapping with his own teammate for 19th position, the punishment carried little practical consequence — and offered Piastri no meaningful redress.
What had already been a miserable afternoon for Piastri then deteriorated further. A gearbox problem struck on lap 56, leaving him with no option but to pull his car to the side of the track and abandon the race entirely — 14 laps short of the finish.

The retirement transformed a potential victory into a pointless afternoon, capping a wretched sequence of events for the Melbourne-born driver.
Norris, by contrast, made the most of his teammate’s misfortune. The reigning world champion had built a gap exceeding 13 seconds before Piastri’s mechanical failure, and he crossed the line comfortably to secure his first win of the 2026 season at the 11th round.
The result will provide welcome momentum for Norris heading into the summer break, while Piastri faces a bitter few weeks of reflection.
