Overview:

Major Sorffly Davius, an NYPD officer and New York Army National Guard member, died March 6 while deployed in Kuwait. His body returned to the United States on March 9, where military officials honored him during a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base.

Major Sorffly Davius, a Haitian American New York Army National Guard officer and New York Police Department veteran, died March 6 while serving at Camp Buehring in Kuwait, military officials said.

Davius, 46, served with the 42nd Infantry Division headquarters, which deployed to Kuwait in summer 2025 in support of Operation Spartan Shield. Officials said his death was not combat-related and the cause remains undetermined.

His body returned to the United States on March 9, when military officials conducted a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.

Davius lived in Cambria Heights, Queens, and was also a married father of six. In civilian life, he served as an NYPD officer, joining the department in 2014. Before deploying overseas, he had been on military leave while serving with the New York National Guard’s Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a security force that works with law enforcement agencies across New York City.

According to the National Guard, Davius worked as a data systems engineering officer for the 42nd Infantry Division. In that role, he oversaw computer and communications network security for the unit.

He began his military career in the U.S. Air Force in 2004 before transferring to the New York Army National Guard in 2013. He previously deployed to Kuwait from October 2010 to July 2011 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

New York National Guard officials said Davius dedicated his career to protecting others both at home and abroad.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Major Davius at this most difficult time,” said Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York. “The U.S. Army and the New York National Guard will do all we can to assist his family.”

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also honored Davius, describing him as a “citizen soldier” who balanced service as a soldier, police officer and first responder.

“His life is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices made by our National Guard members,” Hochul said in a statement.

Friends and neighbors also remembered Davius as a devoted community member. Stephen Chapman, a neighbor in Rockland County, said Davius recently called him from Kuwait to check in.

“All I said was be safe, and when you get back we’ll take you out to dinner,” Chapman said. “He said, ‘I’ll be home soon.’”

Davius served for 12 years with the NYPD and was assigned to the 79th Precinct in Brooklyn, according to reports. His family also said he worked as a paramedic with the Fire Department of New York.

Army Major Anthony Migliore, who served with Davius in the same battalion, said he was known as a dependable leader.

“We all have vivid memories of him running around the Humvees, installing radios and helping us troubleshoot,” Migliore said. “Absolutely a leader.”

After news of his death, flowers appeared outside the family’s home as neighbors paid their respects.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, the Army said.
