An American man has lived to tell an incredible tale of luck and survival after being struck by lightning in New York.
The bolt from the heavens was caught on camera, along with his desperate search for help in the aftermath.

According to the US National Weather Service, Thomas Fahmy’s strike was a one-in-a-million hit.
Doorbell camera footage shows the moment the lightning struck Fahmy as he walked to his car, dropping him to the ground in agony.
“The first thing I first saw was just a white flash,” Fahmy said.
Somehow he stayed conscious and managed to stumble to a nearby house for help.
“Can I come in?” he can be heard asking on the doorbell footage.
“I heard yelling, I heard help me, help me. So I ran to my door and I saw him down here on the ground,” good Samaritan Stefanie Homan said.

“And, you know, got the phone out to call 911.”
Fahmy spent the night in hospital describing unusual symptoms.
“It felt like my feet, I was walking on balloons. It was really, really in pain. Numbing, tingling, feeling,” he said.
But remarkably, doctors found no burns and no serious injuries at all.
“That strike of lightning reminded me that life can go in the blink of an eye,” Fahmy said.
Hoping he hasn’t used up all his luck, Fahmy has already bought a lotto ticket.
