Officials to drivers during World Cup: Stay away
The Northeast U.S. Rail Travel Guide, created by the Northeast Corridor Commission, will assist with rail travel during what Amtrak called “a historic summer of major events,” including the FIFA World Cup, America 250 celebrations, and Sail 250 events.
The Northeast Corridor (NEC), which stretches from Washington, D.C. to Boston, is the busiest passenger rail corridor in North America. Each weekday, Amtrak intercity trains and eight regional rail providers operate more than 2,000 trains carrying nearly 700,000 riders, according to Amtrak.
The website features an overview of the major summer events in the Northeast, how to use rail and local transit services to access major events, information about the NEC’s intercity and regional rail services and operators, and answers to frequently asked questions.
“The Northeast Corridor will play a vital role in moving fans efficiently between host cities, game related events, and the matches themselves,” said Mitch Warren, executive director of the Northeast Corridor Commission, in a statement. “As the Northeast prepares to welcome visitors for the World Cup and commemorate America’s 250th birthday, this guide is a valuable tool to help travelers take full advantage of the region’s extensive rail network.”
Boston is one of 16 cities hosting World Cup games and Massachusetts is hosting seven games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, temporarily rebranded as Boston Stadium. The dates of the matches are June 13, 16, 19, 23, 26, 29 and July 9. MassDOT is warning drivers to avoid the roads during match days and take public transportation as much as possible.
Boston is also hosting many events in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Museum exhibits, reenactments, Tall Ships, and the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular will all mark the milestone.
