Netflix has announced a new live-action Stranger Things spin-off, with The Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefry returning to the franchise for a prequel set in the 1950s.
Titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, the new series will debut on Netflix in 2028, with the announcement made overnight (Australian time) as part of the annual Stranger Things Day fan celebration.
Set before the events of Stranger Things and the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the prequel will introduce a new ensemble of characters, alongside fresh mysteries and mythology.

BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Darkest Hour) will direct the first three episodes, with production taking place in New Mexico.
Trefry, a longtime Stranger Things writer and the playwright behind The First Shadow, will serve as showrunner, co-creator, executive producer and writer.
The Duffer Brothers, who created the original series, will co-create and executive produce through their Upside Down Pictures banner, with Shawn Levy and his 21 Laps Entertainment also producing.
Matt and Ross Duffer said the new series had been in development for several years, with the pair describing the opportunity to bring the project to life as surreal and exhilarating.
“We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating.”
The brothers also teased a new direction for the series, describing it as “Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains”.
Created by The Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and has become a global hit. According to Netflix, the first four seasons have accumulated more than 1.2 billion views.

The streamer also says the fifth and final season delivered its biggest English-language premiere week, with the success driving the earlier seasons back into Netflix’s Global Top 10 for eight weeks.
