Mumbai tree collapse: 10-year-old student dies after tree falls on school bus in Chembur; 5 hospitalised

A 11-year-old student died and five others were hospitalised after a tree fell on a school bus carrying 18 children in Mumbai’s Chembur area on Tuesday, officials said.

The accident took place around 2:50 pm when a tree collapsed onto a bus belonging to Universal School, Tilak Nagar. The rescued students were pulled to safety by the bus conductor and locals. Officials are assessing the circumstances that led to the tree collapse.

According to DCP Sameer Shaikh, Zone 6, the victim, identified as Vihan Shrivastav, was declared brought dead at the hospital. Twelve of the 18 students were evacuated from the bus, while five others were admitted to Zen Hospital for treatment. Out of them, the condition of four children, who suffered minor injuries, is stable, while the fifth student is critically injured and undergoing treatment.

Visuals from the scene showed the tree crushing a section of the bus as emergency responders and BMC officials worked to clear the debris.

Rescue teams rushed to the spot after the tree fell on the vehicle. Initial reports indicated that several children were trapped inside the bus. A crane was brought in to remove the tree and facilitate rescue operations.

Mumbai Police also confirmed the incident and said the tree fell on the school bus around 2:50 pm.
