A motorcyclist ended up severely injured and several hundred feet away from his bike early Monday morning after a crash in Manchester, New Hampshire.

When firefighters arrived at the crash site near Granite Street on the Interstate 293 north off-ramp at about 1:30 a.m., they found the bike with no rider, according to the Manchester Fire Department.

“Upon investigation it was learned the rider was ejected over the guardrail several hundred feet from where his motorcycle ended up,” officials said. “The victim hit the guardrail and ended up falling approximately 65 feet to the edge of the river.”

The off-ramp runs alongside the Merrimack River.

“The victim had catastrophic injuries from the guardrail as well as the fall suffering multi-system trauma,” the fire department said.

First responders used boats to access the motorcyclist, who had applied tourniquets to himself. He was ultimately transported by boat and then ambulance for further care. There were no updates on his condition.
