Melbourne City have bolstered their goalkeeping ranks for the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League season, signing experienced goalkeeper Macklin Freke on a two-year deal.
Freke departed fellow Isuzu UTE A-League side Brisbane Roar at the end of the 2025/26 campaign and made 75 appearances for the club.
The 27-year-old academy graduate established himself as Brisbane’s first-choice goalkeeper and was rewarded for an outstanding 2024/25 campaign by claiming the club’s Player of the Year award.

After ending his decade-long association with the Roar, Freke has now put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal and will compete with James Nieuwenhuizen and Lachie Charles for the right to be City number one.
“Melbourne City has built a strong reputation over a number of years, and you can see how many players have improved and enjoyed success here,” Freke said after his move was made official.
“It’s a club I’m really excited to now be part of.
“I’ve already seen how high the standards are, and I’m looking forward to working with Aurelio, Sander and all of my new teammates.
“Everyone has made me feel welcome since I arrived. I’m ready to work hard, challenge myself and play my part in helping the team achieve another successful season.”

City begin their 2026/27 campaign this Sunday with an Australia Cup Round of 32 clash away to Weston Bears FC, with Freke expected to be part of the squad.
Melbourne City Director of Football Michael Petrillo said Freke’s experience and playing style made him an ideal addition.

Freke’s arrival comes following the departure of goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who earlier in the week signed for French side Troyes.
Beach enjoyed a standout FIFA World Cup campaign, playing in all four of the Socceroos’ matches.
