Melbourne City midfielder Laura Hughes leaves for overseas move

Melbourne City have confirmed midfielder Laura Hughes will leave the club in order to take up an opportunity with an overseas club.

Hughes leaves after three trophy-laden seasons at City, making 69 appearances and scoring four goals while playing a key role in one of the club’s most successful periods.

The midfielder helped City claim three consecutive Ninja A-League Premierships, win the 2025-26 Championship and reach the AFC Women’s Champions League Final.

After joining the club ahead of the 2023-24 season, Hughes made an immediate impact by winning Melbourne City’s Player of the Year award in her debut campaign before receiving the Melissa Barbieri Award the following season in recognition of her leadership role within the squad.

Her performances at club level also earned international recognition, with Hughes making her senior debut for the Matildas against Chinese Taipei in 2024 before later switching her international allegiance to Wales, where she has since added multiple senior caps.

“My time at Melbourne City has been quite extraordinary,” Hughes said, after her exit was confirmed.

“The trophies, the milestones and all the special moments in between. From the staff to my amazing teammates and the incredible fans who supported us through it all.

She continued: “I have been so proud to play for this Club and grateful for all the incredible memories we’ve shared. I have learnt so much as a player and person throughout my time at City, which is a credit to everyone at the Club.

“I want to thank everyone who has been a part of my journey at City and wish the Club the best of luck for the future. Melbourne City will hold a very special place in my heart, and I will always look back on my time in Melbourne with so much fondness and appreciation.”

Hughes made 10 appearances, scoring four goals during the 2025-26 Ninja A-League season and follows Matildas ace Holly McNamara, forward Bryleeh Henry and young defender Alexia Apostolakis in heading overseas after winning the Championship last season.

“Laura has made a big contribution to our Women’s program and has been an integral part of one of the most successful periods in the Club’s history,” Melbourne City Director of Football Michael Petrillo said.

“She arrived at the Club as an established A-League player, but the way she continued to develop over the past three seasons has been outstanding.

“Laura became one of the leaders within our group, established herself among the competition’s best midfielders and earned the opportunity to take the next step in her career overseas.

“We thank Laura for everything she has contributed to Melbourne City and wish her every success for the future.”
