It is easy to mistake the Pallas’s cat for an unusually fluffy domestic cat that has wandered far beyond the neighbourhood. Its round face, low-set ears, short legs and perpetually unimpressed expression make it look almost cartoonish.
But the animal known scientifically as Otocolobus manul is very much a wild cat, one built for some of the harshest landscapes in Asia.
In India, finding one is an altogether different story.
The Pallas’s cat is among the country’s least-known small felids, living largely out of sight across the high-altitude Trans-Himalaya. Unlike the snow leopard, which has become an emblem of Himalayan conservation, the Pallas’s cat rarely announces its presence.
It is small, solitary, remarkably well camouflaged and naturally occurs at low densities, making even camera-trap photographs valuable pieces of evidence.
Where India’s Pallas’s cat has been spotted
The species was first reported from India in Ladakh, with records from the upper Indus Valley dating back to 1991.
Since then, scattered observations have gradually established its presence across parts of the Indian Himalaya. Ladakh remains one of the best-known strongholds, with records from landscapes including Changthang and areas around Hanle. Sightings have also emerged from Sikkim and Uttarakhand.
Then came a series of discoveries that began filling in some of the blanks on the map.
In September 2007, a solitary Pallas’s cat was observed on the Tso Lhamo Plateau in North Sikkim at about 5,073 metres above sea level — the first confirmed record of the species in the state.
In Uttarakhand, researchers working in the Nelang Valley of Gangotri National Park recorded the animal at around 4,800 metres. The 2019 report was significant because it provided the first record of Pallas’s cat from the state and showed that the species’ southern Himalayan distribution extended farther than previously documented.
More recently, research has continued to reveal how easily this cat can slip beneath the radar.

In Upper Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, researchers placed 56 camera traps between March and May 2024 as part of snow leopard population estimation. The cameras unexpectedly recorded Pallas’s cats at three independent sites in Hangrang Valley, between 3,900 and 4,100 metres.
The photographs represented the first photographic evidence of the species in Himachal Pradesh.
And in Arunachal Pradesh, an extensive survey conducted between July and September 2024 produced another first.
WWF-India and the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department deployed 136 camera traps across 83 high-altitude sites covering roughly 2,000 sq km between West Kameng and Tawang. One camera captured a Pallas’s cat at approximately 4,992 metres — the first photographic evidence of the species in Arunachal Pradesh.
The cat is still poorly understood
Its preferred world is not the dense Himalayan forest often associated with wildlife documentaries. Instead, it favours cold, dry and open terrain, alpine grasslands, rocky slopes, shrublands and semi-desert steppe. Rock crevices and abandoned burrows provide shelter, while its thick coat helps it survive extreme temperature fluctuations.

Its appearance is also an evolutionary toolkit. The compact body, short legs, and thick fur reduce heat loss, while its rounded ears sit low against the head. Its coat helps break up its outline among rocks and dry vegetation.

Rather than chasing prey over long distances, the Pallas’s cat is an ambush hunter, feeding largely on rodents and other small mammals, along with birds and reptiles.
That diet makes the health of the Himalayan grassland ecosystem particularly important. Research from across its range has identified declining prey, habitat fragmentation, livestock pressure, mining, infrastructure development, herding dogs, and indiscriminate rodent-control practices among potential threats.
There is still much we do not know
Recent work in Ladakh has demonstrated how modern research methods can reveal animals that conventional surveys miss.
In 2026, researchers documented the first record of Pallas’s cat in the Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary in northern Ladakh using genetic analysis of a scat sample collected during research on sympatric carnivores. The finding expanded the known distribution of the species within Ladakh and showed why genetic evidence can be particularly useful when dealing with an elusive animal whose physical signs are difficult to distinguish.
For a cat that looks almost too expressive to be real, the Pallas’s cat has mastered the opposite strategy in the wild, remaining unseen.
