Kishori, what have you done, laal? Posters slam Congress in Amethi ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit

The political atmosphere in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi heated up as several posters targeting sitting MP Kishori Lal Sharma were put up across numerous locations in the district ahead of the Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

Accusing Sharma of incompetence and drawing a severe comparison with the previous MP, Smriti Irani, whom Sharma defeated in the 2024 general elections by more than 1.5 lakh votes, providing a major political shocker, the posters read, “Do saal Kishori, tumne laal kya kiya?” (Kishori, what have you done in two years?)”

Alleging that Sharma’s contribution to the constituency is limited since becoming the MP, the posters further read that in the last two years, the Congress leader was only able to provide a school bus run by a local Congress leader and an ambulance to a hospital, which is operated by a trust linked to him.

Several other posters also claimed that Irani undertook several developmental projects related to roads, healthcare, education and employment. However, all of these things have come to a standstill since Sharma was elected to the constituency.

POLITICAL FLASHPOINT BETWEEN CONGRESS, BJP

A war of words has taken place between the Congress and the BJP since the posters were spotted.

Describing the posters as a result of the BJP’s ‘frustration’ and ‘desperation’, Congress leader and Railway Consumers Advisory Committee member Anupam Pandey said the BJP was “restless” in Amethi, much like “a fish out of water.”

On the other hand, BJP district president Sudhanshu Shukla said the posters reflected the “voice and sentiments” of the people of Amethi. He said that the work Irani had done for Amethi, Congress could not do in seven decades.

RAHUL GANDHI TO VISIT AMETHI, RAE BARELI

The Leader of the Opposition will embark on a two-day visit to Congress strongholds, Amethi and Rae Bareli.

He will hold key meetings with several senior leaders, district presidents, and other party workers.

The move is widely seen as Congress’s effort to solidify its reach ahead of the 2027 UP assembly election. The party’s performance in the 2024 general election, in which it won 6 Lok Sabha seats, has infused fresh hope among workers.
