Keeping Families Strong Through Healthcare Access

Dr. Robenson Gabriel listens to Marie’s heart during her latest visit to Hope for Haiti’s Infirmary St. Etienne

In the hillside community of Maniche, strength and perseverance are part of everyday life. For 54-year-old Marie Florence, those qualities define her role as both a small business owner and a devoted mother of four. Among her children is her 12-year-old daughter, who still depends on her daily care—a responsibility Marie carries with unwavering love.

But like many in southern Haiti, Marie faces health challenges. Living with hypertension and chronic knee pain, even the simplest daily tasks can become difficult. Since 2025, she has made the long and often challenging journey to Hope for Haiti’s healthcare clinic in Les Cayes.

During a recent visit, Marie was prescribed Baclofen, a muscle relaxant, to help manage her knee pain. This medication has made a meaningful difference for her. Easy to take and effective in easing discomfort, it offers something invaluable: the ability to keep going and be the caregiver her youngest daughter needs.

Marie shared, “I am deeply grateful to Hope for Haiti for the care and support I receive at the clinic. Thanks to this help, I have access to medications and services that bring me hope and comfort in my daily life.”

Access to this type of medication is not guaranteed in many rural communities. In fact, medications like Baclofen are often unavailable or unaffordable on the local market. Without consistent access to essential medicines, manageable conditions can become debilitating.

That’s why partnerships like Hope for Haiti’s Gift-in-Kind program are so critical. Through the generosity of partners like Direct Relief, life-changing medications reach thousands of patients like Marie, helping restore comfort, dignity, and the ability to care for their families.

For Marie, relief from pain means more than physical comfort. It means continuing to run her small business, providing for her children, and showing up every day for the people who rely on her.

And for so many others across southern Haiti, access to essential medicines can make the same life-changing difference.
