The English winger leaves the Sky Blues with 115 appearances, 36 goals and became one of the club’s most beloved overseas signings since joining ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Sydney FC have confirmed the departure of Joe Lolley following a mutual agreement between the player and the club, drawing the curtain on a remarkable four-year chapter in Sky Blue.
The English winger exits as one of the most impactful overseas players in the club’s recent history, having accumulated 115 appearances and 36 goals since joining ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Lolley’s tenure was decorated with honours. He was part of the side that lifted the Australia Cup, claimed both the Mark Viduka Medal and the Alex Tobin Medal, was voted Sydney FC Player of the Year, and earned a place in the PFA Team of the Year in 2024. He also featured prominently across multiple Finals Series campaigns, endearing himself to supporters through his reliability, quality and wholehearted commitment.
The 33-year-old spoke warmly about the club and the bond he had formed with it.
“It’s sad, I’ve spent the last four years of my life here and with these boys, it’s never nice leaving but I move onto my next chapter and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.
“I think the love from the fans [is what I’ll take away].
“Ever since I’ve come here I have felt so supported and it has made it really easy, especially coming from so far away.”
“It’s been an incredible part of my life and it’s been an incredible dressing room for four years, so many different people and characters, I’ve met and friends for life.
“It’s never nice having to miss those people and not being able to see those people as regularly as I do, but that’s life as a footballer and something you do get used to.”
When reflecting on standout moments, Lolley singled out derby fixtures and a particularly electric night against Melbourne Victory as the highlights of his time in Sky Blue.
“I think the derby games were always the best games, with the packed houses and atmospheres were incredible. Those wins mean more than anything.
“The game against Melbourne Victory earlier this season, it was probably one of the best games I have had in my career.
“I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Leichhardt, English conditions and took me back to home, but there have been some great games across the four years.
“I would have liked more team awards, I have reached two semi-finals and a final since I’ve been here and it would have been nice to cap it off this season and win the Grand Final.
“But overall, I think it has been successful and I’ve loved every minute of it.
“I’ll always feel welcome coming back with the fans and the people around the club, so that in itself is a success.”
Men’s Head Coach Patrick Kisnorbo was full of praise for the outgoing winger’s influence on the squad.
“Joe has been an outstanding servant to Sydney FC and someone who has consistently delivered high-quality performances throughout his four seasons here.”
“He is a player who sets high standards every day, whether that’s in training, on matchday or around the dressing room, and he has earned enormous respect from everyone at the club.
“His experience, professionalism and ability to influence games have been invaluable and he has played a significant role in helping drive standards within the squad.
“On behalf of everyone at Sydney FC, I’d like to thank Joe for everything he has given the club and wish him and his family every success for the future.”
Lolley closed with a heartfelt message to the club’s members and supporters.
“Just thank you – since I’ve got here the support has been overwhelming. It’s just grown and grown and some of the receptions I’ve received, especially this season on the back of injuries, was really special to me and something you don’t take lightly.
“I’m sure we’ll cross paths again and I’m sure meet many of the fans again and say thank you in person.”
As for what comes next, Lolley’s destination remains open, though his preference is clear.
“Ideally I’d like to stay in Australia and play football, I still feel like I can really contribute and barring a few injuries I feel like I’m ready to prove myself again and I’m up for whatever challenge comes my way.”
Everyone at Sydney FC wishes Joe Lolley the very best as he embarks on the next chapter of his career.
