For three years, Jim Schwartz served as defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. But when the franchise hired Todd Monken as their next head coach, Schwartz decided to step down from his post.
Schwartz was understanding of the decision, as Cleveland was clearly targeting an offensive mind. But at the same time, he doesn’t think it should’ve been shocking that he resigned, via the Ryan Ripken Show.
“They wanted to go with an offensive guy. They chose Todd. I’m fine with that. They can make decisions that they want to make but they can’t expect me to stay on board for that,” Schwartz said. “A forced marriage isn’t going to work in the NFL.”

The defensive guru hasn’t found his next NFL landing spot yet and seems poised to scout out options after the 2026 season. If/when he returns to the league, he’ll have plenty of experience to lean on. Schwartz is a former head coach and has been defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles alongside the Browns. Overall, Schwartz has been coaching in the NFL for 29 years.
In both 2023 and 2025, the defensive coordinator helped Cleveland reach new heights. The Browns lead the league in defense during the former season, allowing 270.2 yards per game. They ranked fourth in the latter, allowing 283.6.
Schwartz clearly believes that should’ve given him an opportunity to be head coach of the Browns. Still, he isn’t going to be bitter over Cleveland’s decision, especially after already deciding to leave. Plus, if Schwartz stayed, he now wouldn’t have his best defensive weapon in Myles Garrett to work with.
