Isha Ambani attended the 40th anniversary celebrations of the label Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla at its newly launched flagship store Mubarak Baug in South Mumbai’s Dhobi Talao district. She was there with her mother Nita and sisters-in-law Shloka and Radhika Ambani at the newly-renovated Framjee Cawasjee Institute where designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla held a fashion show featuring new and old supermodels of the Indian fashion industry in their archival looks. While most guests were dressed in the label’s traditional Indian creations, Ambani wore an embroidered skirt set with the ’90s halterneck blouse.

The custom piece seen on Ambani features matching embroidery on the top and the ankle length skirt. Mughal era-inspired jaali designs, made with aari and zardozi work take centrestage. The set is also generously embellished with Swarovski crystals, pearls and bugle beads. While her piece is not vintage, and went into production a month and a half before this appearance, taking artisans in Jani-Khosla’s ateliers close to 450 hours to make by hand, the jaali motif is not new, having made its appearance as early as 2009 in the label’s collection Abaan. The piece itself feels like an extension of its latest collection Raj that interprets the label’s signature embroideries with a European flair.
International celebrity stylist Andrew Mukamal, best known for his works with actor Margot Robbie, styled Ambani’s look for this appearance. The choker-style necklace with diamonds and pearls, statement diamond earrings and a multi-ring diamond-encrusted ring, all from Nita Ambani’s personal jewellery collection, were the perfect accoutrements for this look that was a contemporary take on the ’90s revival style, which is still rooted in Indian craftsmanship traditions. For shoes, he turned to a pair of crystal-studded heels from Italian footwear brand René Caovilla and a metallic chainmesh top handle bag.
