A Familiar Face in a Completely Different Philadelphia Team

The Philadelphia 76ers had one of the best rosters in team history going into the 2026-27 NBA season. Expectations surrounding the team have reached championship-or-bust status following a bold summer that brought Jaylen Brown and LeBron James to Philadelphia.

The Sixers have plenty of star power, with Joel Embiid, James, Brown, and up-and-coming rookie prospect VJ Edgecombe sharing the floor. But one well-known player might still be more crucial to Philadelphia’s success than everyone else.

Tyrese Maxey is that player. Maxey proved his worth during Tuesday’s 106-100 season-opening victory over the reigning champion New York Knicks, leading all scorers with 28 points despite the hype surrounding Philadelphia’s most recent additions.

Even though a single performance cannot decide a season, it does pose a crucial question: Is Maxey still the 76ers’ most valuable player?

Maxey’s Development Has Changed Philadelphia’s Future

Few could have guessed Maxey’s future significance to the team when Philadelphia chose him with the 21st overall choice in the 2020 NBA Draft. Maxey, who was formerly thought of as a young guard with promise, went on to become an All-Star and one of Philadelphia’s most dependable offensive weapons.

He is especially challenging for opposing defenses to contain because of his quickness, perimeter shooting, and ability to attack the basket. More significantly, Maxey has shown that he is capable of handling more attacking duty. His growth has given Philadelphia something very valuable: a young, established star who can continue to grow and contribute alongside exceptional veterans. Maxey is still a crucial component of the Sixers’ long-term goals despite the team’s significant roster changes.

The Offensive Weapon Philadelphia Cannot Replace

Philadelphia’s offensive variety has been increased with the additions of James and Brown.

Brown is another seasoned scorer who can create opportunities for himself and his teammates, while James offers outstanding court vision and playmaking skills. One of the most dangerous offensive centers in the league is still Embiid.

However, Maxey’s blazing pace makes Philadelphia’s offense particularly challenging to stop. The Sixers gain a new offensive dimension from his ability to accelerate, attack defenders, and create scoring opportunities in transition. When taking into account the age and playing styles of Philadelphia’s other stars, that becomes especially valuable.

James, who is 41 years old, can manage the offense with his passing and decision-making instead of having to score every nite. Brown provides a another scoring threat on the perimeter, while Embiid can keep playing around the paint and midrange.

These advantages are enhanced by Maxey’s capacity to quicken the offense. His special skill set could increase his value rather than diminish it due to Philadelphia’s increased star power.

Sharing the Spotlight Without Losing His Identity

Determining how Philadelphia’s stars can work together offensively is one of head coach Nick Nurse’s most difficult tasks. Establishing consistent roles will be crucial because there are several individuals who can score 20 or more points on any given nite.

Maxey may have to get used to having fewer possessions when he is the main ball handler. Sharing offensive duties does not, however, always equate to a loss of effectiveness. Maxey may have more open looks because to James’ passing prowess, and he may be able to attack advantageous matchups due to the defensive focus on Embiid and Brown. Making sure Maxey stays aggressive will be crucial.

Because he is surrounded by talented veterans, Philadelphia cannot afford for its young guard to become unduly passive. The Sixers’ ability to balance their star-studded roster may depend on his desire to attack defenders, make his own shots, and provide offensive pressure.

Philadelphia’s Present and Future

Maxey’s significance outside of the present season is another thing that sets him apart from a number of his teammates. James is about to embark on his 24th NBA season, and it seems unlikely that Philadelphia’s title window with the four-time champion would last forever.

Embiid must also manage his availability and health throughout an NBA season that is becoming more and more demanding. Maxey, meanwhile, is still in his prime and has a lot of basketball ahead of him. Because of this, his job is especially crucial for a team trying to win a title without jeopardizing its long-term viability.

Maxey provides consistency and stability, but James and Embiid might get most of the spotlight when it comes to Philadelphia’s immediate title hopes. When the team’s seasoned players inevitably depart, he and Edgecombe could contribute to defining the next phase of Sixers basketball.

The Star Philadelphia Still Needs Most

The Philadelphia 76ers have put together a team with enough skill to contend with the top clubs in the NBA. James offers leadership and championship experience. Brown offers both defensive versatility and scoring ability. When healthy, Embiid continues to be a formidable force, and Edgecombe is just another intriguing aspect of Philadelphia’s future.

However, Maxey may still be the player who makes everything work. He is a vital component of the team’s championship aspirations due to his speed, scoring prowess, ongoing development, and long-term significance.

His worth was first demonstrated by Philadelphia’s victory over New York, but the real test will be during the 82-game regular season and ultimately the postseason. Even if the Sixers’ names are more well-known than ever, their most crucial player hasn’t necessarily changed. That honor might still belong to Tyrese Maxey.
