The Cleveland Browns are navigating an intriguing quarterback competition between veteran Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders as Organized Team Activities (OTAs) commence.
Amid media speculation regarding whether Deion Sanders should take a step back to allow his son to establish an independent relationship with offensive coordinator Todd Monken, the franchise is keeping its plans intentionally vague.
During practice, both quarterbacks took turns leading different drills, with Monken remaining coy about the competition, stating that nothing has changed; they will continue to rotate players and will start whoever performs best.
Despite sharing repetitions, there are growing indications of a promising return for Watson, based on his impressive performance during practice.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, Watson has been throwing with the arm strength that was noticeably absent in 2024, following his major shoulder surgery in 2023.
He has been delivering accurate deep passes during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 sessions to dynamic rookies Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion, along with Jerry Jeudy, Isaiah Bond, Cedric Tillman, and Jamari Thrash.
After missing last season to fully recover from consecutive Achilles repairs, Watson’s arm is completely rested, and he is moving exceptionally well on his twice-repaired leg.
Monken even referred to Watson’s athleticism as a “superpower” weapon.
This healthier version of Watson stands in stark contrast to 2024, when he faced severe struggles due to a depleted offensive line, an unsettled Amari Cooper, and a lack of confidence, culminating in home boos before his season-ending injury.
Monken deeply appreciates Watson’s relentless work ethic, despite his financial security.
The coordinator noted that even though Watson has already made plenty of money and experienced both significant success and disappointing injuries, his determination to return, compete for the starting job, and actively reshape his career narrative is incredibly admirable.
