A failed crop can wipe out months of work for a small farmer. And as summers get hotter, rains become harder to predict, and water grows scarcer, even a carefully planned growing season can unravel in days.
For Sathya Raghu Mokkapati, the human cost of that uncertainty became clear when he was just 17. In his village, he once saw a farmer eating mud. When Sathya asked him why, the farmer replied, “My crops failed. My stomach doesn’t know my pockets are empty.”
The words stayed with him. Years later, they would help shape an idea designed to give small farmers greater protection from the high risks that can destroy a harvest.
In 2015, Sathya, along with Kaushik K, Saumya and Ayush Sharma, founded ‘Kheyti’, an agricultural startup that developed the ‘Greenhouse-in-a-Box’, a compact greenhouse designed specifically for smallholder farmers.
Keeping crops protected from extreme weather
Unlike crops grown in open fields, plants inside the Greenhouse-in-a-Box are protected from harsh weather conditions. The structure creates a controlled growing environment where crops are less exposed to excessive heat, rain, and pest attacks.

Explaining the idea, Sathya says, “We build houses to live in safety and to protect ourselves from environmental factors like heat, rain, insects, etc. Likewise, a greenhouse helps plants thrive.”
The idea is simple: create a more stable environment around the crop, even when conditions outside become difficult.
Making every drop of water count
The greenhouse creates a microclimate that helps crops grow under more favourable conditions.
According to the entrepreneur, “Our greenhouse cuts off excess heat by 2-4 degrees Celsius, reduces pests by 90 per cent and saves 98 per cent water as compared to open-field conventional irrigation.”
Those numbers address three pressures farmers increasingly face at once. Lower temperatures can reduce heat stress, protection from insects can limit crop damage, and dramatically lower water use can make cultivation more viable in areas facing water shortages or erratic rainfall.

Helping farmers make better growing decisions
Kheyti also supports farmers beyond installing the greenhouse. They receive guidance on which crops to grow, when to plant them and how to cultivate them inside the structure, helping them use the greenhouse more effectively and improve productivity.
The greenhouse is available in two sizes. One covers 320 square metres and costs around Rs 2 lakh, while the larger model spans 462 square metres and costs approximately Rs 3.35 lakh.
Designed with smallholder farmers in mind
Conventional greenhouses are usually out of reach for small farmers due to their cost. Kheyti developed the Greenhouse-in-a-Box as a more accessible option for those cultivating smaller landholdings.

Speaking in his TED Talk, Sathya explains that while climate change is a challenge far larger than any individual farm, farmers can still create more favourable growing conditions within a small portion of their land.
That thinking sits at the heart of the Greenhouse-in-a-Box: give a farmer greater control over the conditions that directly affect the next crop.
Preparing farms for a harder climate
For smallholder farmers, climate resilience can come down to very practical questions: Will there be enough water? Will extreme heat damage the crop? Will pests destroy the harvest before it can be sold?
Kheyti’s Greenhouse-in-a-Box attempts to reduce each of those risks within a compact patch of farmland, while helping farmers plan what they grow and how they grow it.
A conversation Sathya had at 17 began with a farmer whose failed crop had left him hungry. Years later, it helped inspire a solution built around a simple hope: that one bad spell of weather should not have the power to undo an entire season of work.
