The Haitian Soccer League’s playoffs started with slim victories, a nail-biting 1-1 draw and a highly controversial penalty kick last weekend.

All first matches were played on Jan. 11, day one of the playoffs. Ouanaminthe Football Club 2011 downed Racing Football Club des Gonaives 2-0 home at Parc Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Association Sportive Capoise (ASC) traveled to Parc Levelt in Saint-Marc and handed Baltimore Sportif Club a 2-1 defeat in Group A.

In Group B, Association Sportive Cavaly bowed down to Violette Athletic Club 1-0 at Parc Gerard Christophe in Leogane. In the other action in Group B, reigning champions Juventus des Cayes F.C. drew with Racing Club Haitien 1-1 at their turf, Parc des Gabions, in Les Cayes.

The Haitian League’s opening season started in November with 14 teams, eight in Group A with clubs from the northern region and six in Group B which had teams from the south. The top four teams from each group made the playoffs. The playoffs are divided into two groups of four.

In Group A, Ouanaminthe earned a controversial penalty kick after the ball struck the arm of a Racing FC defender’s hand. Ounaminthe veteran captain Roobens ‘Paloulou’ Philogene converted the penalty kick in the 54th minute. Sinor Louibenn doubled the lead for OFC in the 65th minute.

“We started the playoffs on a good note but there are some mistakes we need to fix,” Philogene told Cap-Haitien News after the game. “But what’s important is that we got the three points, we’re going to try to keep this up.”

In the other encounter in Group A, ASC powered past Baltimore through goals from Henri Saint-Juste and Fredlin Philistin. Baltimore were on target via an own goal from Stanley Volcin.

Over in Group B, Fernando Ciceron netted the lone goal of Violette’s 1-0 win over Cavaly. In the other match in Group B, Racing CH opened the scoring against Juventus, in the 35th minute thanks to a goal from Mackenson Rosier. Jeanson Saint-Cyr levelled the scoring for Juventus in the 62nd minute.

The playoffs will resume on Wednesday, Jan. 14 with four matches. ASC will welcome Racing FC home at Parc Saint Victor while Baltimore will travel to Parc Notre Dame to take on Ouanaminthe in Group A. In Group B, Violette will clash with Juventus at Land des Gabions and Cavaly will face Racing CH.
