The City-Wide and Special Month-Long Expansion for America’s 250th Showcases the City’s  History, Cultural Diversity, and World Heritage City Designation Through a Variety of Free and Ticketed Events

Philadelphia, PA (April, 23, 2026) – Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) has announced the  lineup of events for World Heritage Month, taking place throughout May 2026. This special, one year expansion transforms the traditionally week-long celebration into a month-long series of  activations in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, building on the legacy of World Heritage Week while reflecting GPA’s year-round work connecting Philadelphia’s diverse communities to  each other and to the world.

World Heritage Month is a tribute to Philadelphia’s designation as a World Heritage City, celebrating the city’s rich history, vibrant multicultural communities, and international connections.  Established by the city government, World Heritage Day falls on the last Thursday of May each  year, and in 2026, the celebration is extended into a dynamic, citywide series of events. Rooted  in collaboration, the initiative brings together a broad network of community partners, cultural  institutions, and international organizations, alongside the Office of the City Representative.  Through GPA’s leadership and ongoing work across Philadelphia, these partnerships come to life during World Heritage Month, creating a multi-organizational festival centered on culture,  education, and global engagement, while fostering cross-cultural exchange.

“As Philadelphia takes center stage for America’s 250th, World Heritage Month underscores our city’s unique role in both national history and global dialogue,” said Zabeth Teelucksingh,  President of Global Philadelphia Association. “By expanding from World Heritage Week to a  month-long celebration, we’re creating more opportunities to showcase the people, cultures, and  partnerships that define Philadelphia’s global identity. It’s a reflection of the scale and significance  of this moment for our city.

World Heritage Month sets the stage for Global Philadelphia Association’s annual World Heritage  City Celebration in September, which will continue to honor individuals who have made significant  contributions to Philadelphia’s international profile and global engagement.
