From Russia’s Snow Forests to India’s Sundarbans Mangroves

Most of us picture tigers prowling through dense tropical jungles. But the world’s largest cat has mastered landscapes far more diverse than popular imagination allows, from icy forests in Russia to tidal mangrove swamps in India, and from towering Himalayan foothills to Southeast Asia’s rainforests. 

On International Tiger Day, here’s a journey through the remarkable homes that continue to shelter one of Earth’s most iconic predators.

A tiger silently padding through waist-high grass. Another weaving through tangled mangrove roots as tides rise around it. Yet another leaving fresh paw prints on snow in temperatures that plunge below -30°C.

They all belong to the same species.

For centuries, tigers have evolved into masters of adaptation, surviving in landscapes so dramatically different that they seem like homes for entirely different animals. 

While many people imagine them living exclusively in dense jungles, the tiger’s range stretches across some of the planet’s most extraordinary ecosystems.

These habitats aren’t just beautiful — they are among the most biologically rich and ecologically important landscapes on Earth. 

They also reveal another important fact: saving tigers means protecting an astonishing diversity of ecosystems.

1. The frozen forests of Russia

Perhaps the last place anyone expects to find a tiger is in snow.

Yet the Amur (Siberian) tiger, the world’s largest tiger subspecies, inhabits the coniferous and mixed forests of Russia’s Far East, with a small population extending into northeastern China.

Winter temperatures here routinely fall below -30°C, and snowfall blankets the forests for months.

Unlike their tropical cousins, these tigers have thick fur, larger paws that act like natural snowshoes, and an extra layer of body fat to survive the bitter cold. Their lighter orange coats blend surprisingly well with snowy landscapes broken by tree trunks and winter shadows.

It is the northernmost home of any wild tiger on Earth.

2. India’s mangrove kingdom

Now imagine the exact opposite.

Instead of snow, there are shifting tides.

Instead of dry forest trails, there are muddy islands crisscrossed by tidal creeks.

The Sundarbans, spanning India and Bangladesh, is the world’s largest mangrove forest and home to one of the planet’s most unique tiger populations.

Here, Bengal tigers have adapted to life among salt-tolerant trees, tidal channels, and muddy terrain. They are exceptional swimmers.

As sea levels rise because of climate change, the Sundarbans is also becoming one of the most vulnerable tiger habitats on Earth.

3. The endless grasslands

Not all forests are dense.

Some tiger landscapes are wide, open grasslands stretching as far as the eye can see.

In reserves like Kaziranga, Manas, and Dudhwa, tall elephant grass grows over four metres high, creating natural cover for predators.

These floodplain ecosystems are incredibly productive, supporting dense populations of deer, wild pigs, and buffalo, the prey that sustain healthy tiger populations.

The annual floods that replenish these grasslands also maintain one of India’s richest wildlife landscapes, shared by rhinos, elephants, swamp deer, and hundreds of bird species.

4. The Himalayan foothills

The forests below the Himalayas present yet another world.

Protected landscapes such as Corbett, Rajaji, and parts of Bhutan and Nepal combine river valleys, rocky hills, sal forests, and mountain streams.

Tigers here navigate steep terrain that demands strength, agility and endurance.

As temperatures rise globally, scientists believe these higher-elevation forests could become increasingly important for tiger conservation.

5. Southeast Asia’s tropical rainforests

The rainforests of Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia represent some of the oldest forests on Earth.

Dense vegetation, towering trees, and year-round rainfall make them challenging places for both predators and researchers.

Tigers living here often have enormous territories because prey densities are lower than in India’s grasslands.

These forests are biodiversity hotspots, sheltering clouded leopards, sun bears, hornbills, tapirs and countless other species alongside tigers.

6. Dry deciduous forests

India’s best-known tiger reserves, such as Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench, Ranthambore, and Tadoba, lie within dry deciduous forests.

Unlike evergreen jungles, these forests change dramatically with the seasons.

Leaves fall during summer, creating open woodlands where prey animals become easier to spot. During the monsoon, the forests transform into lush green landscapes teeming with life.

These habitats support some of the world’s highest tiger densities, proving that seasonal forests can be just as important as tropical rainforests.

7. Swamps, wetlands, and riverine forests

Many tiger habitats revolve around water.

Across India, Nepal and Southeast Asia, riverine forests and wetlands provide year-round prey, dense vegetation and reliable freshwater.

These ecosystems also help regulate floods, recharge groundwater, and support millions of people downstream.

Protecting tigers here often means safeguarding rivers that sustain both wildlife and human communities.

Tiger is an “umbrella species”

A tiger is often called an umbrella species, and protecting it means protecting everything beneath that umbrella.

Each landscape that shelters tigers also stores carbon, purifies water, supports pollinators and sustains thousands of other plants and animals.

The snow forests of Russia regulate northern ecosystems. The Sundarbans buffer devastating cyclones. India’s grasslands support endangered rhinos and elephants. Rainforests absorb vast amounts of carbon while harbouring irreplaceable biodiversity.

Saving these habitats, therefore, means protecting far more than a single charismatic predator.

International Tiger Day is often celebrated with numbers: how many tigers remain, how many reserves exist, how populations have recovered.

But perhaps the greatest conservation story lies in the astonishing places it still calls home.

The tiger reminds us that resilience is written into nature’s most extraordinary landscapes.

Protecting the tiger, therefore, is about ensuring that these remarkable worlds, so different from one another, yet equally vital, continue to thrive for generations to come.
