From being body-shamed in school to starring in a Netflix special, Sumukhi Suresh is turning the judgements women face into comedy.
She gave up dancing for fear of being laughed at, but eventually found her voice through stand-up comedy. She went on to create and star in Pushpavalli and create Motormouth to make more space for women’s stories. In her Netflix special Hoemonal, Sumukhi tackles body image, dating, being single and the societal pressure on women to become mothers. Through humour, she brings conversations often brushed under the carpet into the spotlight, challenging the expectations women are constantly asked to live up to.
Her journey is a reminder that you don’t have to shrink yourself to fit into someone else’s idea of who you should be. Sometimes, the most powerful way to challenge judgement is to laugh at it, speak up and tell your story on your own terms.
What do you think women are judged unfairly for the most: their bodies, their age or being single? Tell us in the comments!
