Residents in parts of Port Adelaide are being urged to leave immediately after a structure fire involving sulphur triggered an Emergency Warning on Thursday afternoon.
The warning, issued at 3:42pm by the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS), advises anyone within the boundary of the Port River, Port River Expressway, Hanson Road and Club Road, extending to the Port River, to evacuate immediately due to hazardous materials and toxic smoke.
Authorities say the fire is burning sulphur, producing large volumes of toxic smoke that pose a serious risk to health.
People within the warning area are being told to leave immediately and not enter the exclusion zone under any circumstances.
Emergency services have warned that remaining in the area could place lives at risk, and assistance may not be available for those who choose to stay.
Residents who evacuate are encouraged to take their pets, medications and mobile phones with them and stay with family or friends outside the warning area, or travel to an evacuation centre if required.
Anyone who is away from home is advised not to return until authorities declare it safe.
Motorists travelling through the affected area should immediately leave, keeping vehicle windows closed, air conditioning switched off and external vents shut while exiting the zone.
For those who are unable to leave, the MFS advises closing all windows, doors and air vents, turning off air conditioners that draw air from outside, and moving into an internal room with as few windows as possible. Residents should also seal gaps around doors and windows with wet towels, plastic or tape where possible to minimise exposure to the toxic smoke.
Emergency services continue to respond to the incident, with the warning expected to remain in place until at least 6:30pm unless updated sooner.
Authorities are urging the community to stay informed through the Alert SA app, local ABC Radio, FIVEaa and other emergency broadcasters as conditions change.
