‘Donald Trump’ buffalo spared from Eid sacrifice after going viral in Bangladesh

A buffalo that went viral online over its resemblance to US President Donald Trump has been spared from ritual slaughter in Bangladesh.

The 700kg albino buffalo, nicknamed “Donald Trump” for its flowing blond hair and distinctive fringe, was taken into official custody on Wednesday, hours before it was due to be sacrificed for Eid celebrations.

Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority country, celebrates Eid al-Adha with the ritual sacrifice of livestock.

But “Buffalo Trump” was granted a last-minute reprieve after local authorities raised security concerns following a surge of public interest.

“At the last moment, the decision was taken to spare the buffalo from sacrifice due to security concerns and the unusual level of public interest,” the country’s Home Ministry said.

Curious visitors travelled long distances to catch a glimpse of the four-year-old bovine, which became known for both its blond locks and calm temperament.

The buffalo will now be relocated to the national zoo in Dhaka, where it will be cared for.

The animal’s former owner, Ziauddin Mridha, said his younger brother gave it the nickname after spotting the resemblance to Trump.

“It is very calm in nature. Albino buffaloes are generally peaceful and do not become aggressive unless provoked,” he told NDTV.
