After a season-ending injury to Alex Wright, the Cleveland Browns went out and signed veteran Derek Barnett.
With injuries to the Cleveland Browns’ defensive line, the team went out to try to find some help to fill the void. At first, many thought that Za’Darius Smith would be making a reunion, until he was swooped up by Kevin Stefanski and the Atlanta Falcons at the last minute.
That led the Browns to search for another avenue, and they landed on Derek Barnett, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
“Defensive end Derek Barnett is signing with the Cleveland Browns on a one-year deal up to $5.5M, per source. The former first-round pick is back for Year 10, spent previous three years in Houston,” Fowler wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Barnett signing comes after Alex Wright was placed on season-ending injured reserve from a ruptured Achilles that he suffered in practice earlier in the week. The Browns were going to need some help on the line, and the hope is that Barnett could make an impact. He finished with five sacks last season on the Texans.
Even before Wright’s injury, the Browns had brought in Smith and Jadeveon Clowney in hopes of signing them, but both players landed with new teams.
The Browns will be looking to still be disruptive on the defensive line this season after trading Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams. They were able to get Jared Verse in return, and he’s shown through the early part of his career that he can get to the quarterback. If they can get some positive things out of the players they have, the defense should be one of the better groups in the league.
