When a market grows, the infrastructure supporting it must grow too. For Bhavna Nihalani, that insight became the foundation of a career dedicated to connecting international manufacturing markets with the Gulf’s rapidly developing fashion economy. As Founder and Show Director of the International Apparel & Textile Fair, she has spent more than a decade turning a clear commercial gap into a platform that brings global suppliers and professional buyers together in Dubai.
Recognising a Market Before It Was Fully Established
When IATF launched in Dubai in 2014, the city was already established as a major retail, commercial and international business destination. Yet the fashion supply chain had room for a stronger dedicated B2B sourcing environment. International textile mills, apparel manufacturers, private-label producers and regional buyers needed a more direct way to meet, negotiate and build lasting business relationships.
Bhavna Nihalani recognised that opportunity early, understanding that Dubai’s growing fashion economy would eventually require stronger sourcing infrastructure capable of connecting international manufacturing with regional demand.
Together with her late husband and co-founder, Dilip Nihalani, she created IATF around a straightforward but ambitious idea: if Dubai was becoming increasingly important to fashion and retail, it also needed a platform where the global supply side of the industry could connect directly with regional demand.
The first edition welcomed approximately 50 exhibitors. More than a decade later, after 20 editions, IATF has grown to welcome more than 450 exhibitors representing over 30 countries, alongside more than 6,000 professional buyers from more than 80 nationalities.
The numbers demonstrate scale. But the deeper achievement is the ecosystem behind them.
Building a Global Sourcing Ecosystem
Manufacturers return to strengthen their presence in the Gulf. New sourcing markets join the exhibitor community. Retailers, importers, distributors, private-label companies and buying teams arrive with evolving procurement requirements. Each edition creates another opportunity for international businesses to understand regional demand while giving Gulf buyers greater access to manufacturing capabilities from around the world.
For Bhavna, building this ecosystem has required much more than organising an exhibition.
It has demanded an understanding of how the fashion supply chain actually works, from production capabilities and sourcing volumes to minimum order quantities, lead times, private-label requirements, supplier reliability and market-entry considerations. That commercial understanding has helped IATF develop beyond the traditional concept of a trade exhibition into a broader business-matching and market-access platform.
Where Global Trade Becomes Personal
At its heart, the platform is built around the value of direct buyer-supplier engagement, commercial trust and face-to-face sourcing within international trade.
A buyer can discover a supplier online, but meeting face to face can create a different level of commercial understanding. Product development can be discussed directly. Manufacturing capabilities can be assessed. Business terms can be explored. Partnerships that may eventually cross borders can begin with a conversation on an exhibition floor.
That ability to facilitate those conversations has become central to Bhavna Nihalani’s vision.
Her leadership philosophy has also been influenced by the example of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, particularly the emphasis on long-term economic development, international competitiveness and positioning Dubai as a destination where global industries can meet, trade and grow.
Carrying Forward a Shared Vision
There is also a deeply personal dimension to her journey.
Following the loss of her husband and co-founder, Dilip Nihalani, Bhavna chose not only to preserve what they had built together, but to broaden its international participation, strengthen its buyer network and continue developing its commercial relevance.
Her role evolved from founder and organiser into that of an industry platform-builder, with responsibility spanning exhibitor development, buyer engagement, international participation, market access and the wider commercial direction of the fair.
That evolution reflects a broader entrepreneurial lesson. Building an institution is rarely about one successful launch. It is about continuing to understand a market as that market changes.
Positioning Dubai as a Global Meeting Point
Today, the International Apparel & Textile Fair sits within Dubai’s expanding B2B fashion and textile ecosystem, bringing international manufacturing capabilities closer to professional buyers across the Gulf and beyond. Its growth reflects the increasing importance of Dubai as a meeting point between global supply and regional commercial demand.
Yet Bhavna Nihalani’s contribution is not defined only by exhibitor numbers or editions.
Her larger achievement has been recognising that a growing fashion economy requires infrastructure capable of supporting it. Manufacturers need access to new markets. Buyers need opportunities to discover suppliers. Businesses need places where commercial relationships can develop in person.
More than a decade after its launch, IATF represents the result of that vision.
Building More Than a Trade Fair
Bhavna Nihalani did not simply build a trade fair in Dubai. She built a platform around a market need, developed it through persistence and commercial understanding, and continued expanding it through one of the most defining personal transitions of her life.
Her story is ultimately about recognising a market need before it was fully established, building the infrastructure around that need, and creating a credible meeting point in Dubai between global manufacturing capability and Gulf buying demand.
In a global industry where relationships, access and trust can determine the next business opportunity, Bhavna Nihalani has spent more than a decade building the place where those opportunities can begin.
