The Boston Bruins handed a bit of business on Thursday afternoon, signing restricted free agent forward Lukas Reichel to a one-year contract with an NHL cap hit of $950,000.
Reichel stands as some added depth for a Bruins team that is looking to add more skill and speed to their roster this offseason.
The 23-year-old forward still holds some upside as a former first-round pick (17th overall, 2020) who has continued to earn reps in the NHL ranks due to his 0-to-60 speed and playmaking capabilities.
Acquired by Boston in a deal with Vancouver for a 2026 sixth-round pick back in March, Reichel played for both Boston and Providence this past season.
In 10 games with Boston, the German forward scored a goal and posted three total points with nine shots and five blocks. He also appeared in Boston’s lopsided Game 4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at TD Garden.
Over 29 total games in the NHL last year, split between Chicago, Vancouver, and Boston, Reichel scored three goals and eight points.
Retaining Reichel as a depth piece gives Boston some options as it tries to add more pace up front, while his $950,000 cap hit can be buried down in Providence if he can’t crack the NHL roster out of camp.
Reichel, who will represent Germany at the World Championships in Switzerland later this week, will need to clear waivers if he doesn’t make Boston’s roster this fall.
With Reichel re-signed, Boston has one more restricted free agent currently on its roster in defenseman Jordan Harris, while both Viktor Arvidsson and Andrew Peeke are pending unrestricted free agents.
