From arriving in Dubai with ambition and determination to building businesses across security, technology and artificial intelligence, Bruce Wienand’s story is one shaped by more than two decades of persistence, continuous learning and an enduring commitment to the UAE.
A New Beginning in the UAE
When Bruce Wienand arrived in the United Arab Emirates in November 2001, he could hardly have imagined where the next 25 years would take him.
Originally from South Africa, Wienand began his career in the security industry and built his professional life in the UAE from the ground up. His journey was not an overnight success story. It was developed over years of working, learning, taking calculated risks and progressively assuming greater responsibility.
Dubai was also very different in 2001 from the global city it is today. Wienand had the opportunity to grow professionally alongside a country experiencing one of the most remarkable periods of development in modern history.
For him, the UAE did not simply become a place to work. It became home.
Building PPS from the Ground Up
In 2005, while still employed full-time, Wienand started what would eventually become PPS Group as a side business. In 2011, he made the decision to commit himself fully to the company.
The business evolved considerably over the years.
What began in the security sector developed into a multidisciplinary specialist consultancy delivering security consulting and engineering, security risk and threat assessments, ICT and ELV systems, audio-visual engineering, acoustics, aviation security and related specialist services.
Today, PPS works on complex projects across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC, supporting government entities, developers, architects, engineering consultants and major organisations.
Its work includes security strategies for critical infrastructure, large-scale developments, hospitality, residential and commercial projects, transportation and aviation facilities.
For Wienand, however, the achievement is not simply the size of the company.
It is the fact that something started on the side in 2005 has survived, evolved and grown over more than two decades.
Education Never Stopped
An important part of Wienand’s career has been his belief that experience and education should complement one another.
Rather than allowing business success to replace learning, he continued studying throughout his professional career.
He completed an MBA in 2016 and, in 2026, completed his Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), with research examining the role of innovation in gaining competitive advantage within the UAE technology industry.
His professional qualifications span security, project management and risk management, including the internationally recognised CPP®, PSP® and PCI® certifications, together with PMP® and RMP® credentials.
That combination of academic research and practical experience has increasingly influenced his approach to leadership, risk and technology.
Aviation: A Lifelong Passion
Aviation has remained an important part of Wienand’s life, although contrary to the previous account of his story, it was never the business on which PPS was founded.
His involvement with flying stretches back decades. He completed his first solo flight in 1999 and later became a licensed private pilot.
Flying remains a personal passion and has also complemented his professional involvement in aviation security and infrastructure projects.
For Wienand, aviation represents something broader than flying an aircraft. It reflects the disciplines of preparation, situational awareness, risk management and decision-making—principles that have also shaped his approach to business.
From Security to Artificial Intelligence
Wienand’s business interests eventually expanded beyond the traditional engineering and security environment.
He became involved in TForge, a technology company specialising in conversational artificial intelligence, where he serves as Chairman.
The move into AI represents another stage in a career that has consistently evolved alongside technology.
TForge develops AI-powered conversational solutions designed to help organisations automate and improve interactions at scale, including intelligent voice applications and enterprise communication solutions.
Wienand sees artificial intelligence not simply as another technology trend, but as part of a fundamental transformation in how companies operate, communicate and compete.
His involvement in both PPS and TForge also places him at the intersection of two increasingly connected environments: physical infrastructure and digital intelligence.
Leadership Through Experience
More than 25 years of professional experience has also changed Wienand’s definition of success.
Building a company involves considerably more than winning projects. It means surviving difficult periods, making mistakes, managing cash flow, developing people, adapting to changing markets and continuing when circumstances do not unfold according to plan.
Those experiences have shaped his leadership philosophy.
He believes strongly in professional development, accountability and giving people opportunities to grow—but also in the importance of resilience.
His career has taken him from operational security roles to consulting, engineering, entrepreneurship, board-level leadership and technology.
Rather than representing separate careers, each stage has built upon the previous one.
Family Behind the Journey
Despite the demands of business, family remains central to Wienand’s life.
He is married and a father of two, and the UAE has been home to his family for many years.
That connection makes his relationship with the country much deeper than a business story.
After approximately a quarter of a century in the Emirates, many of the most important milestones of his adult life—professional, entrepreneurial and personal—have happened here.
25 Years in the UAE
Perhaps the most significant element of Bruce Wienand’s story is its timescale.
He arrived in the UAE in 2001.
Twenty-five years later, he has witnessed Dubai and the wider Emirates transform into one of the world’s most internationally connected business environments while undergoing a transformation of his own.
From working in security to establishing a business, from completing an MBA to earning a doctorate, from becoming a pilot to leading specialist engineering projects, and from traditional security consulting to participating in the emerging world of artificial intelligence, the journey has continually evolved.
There was no single moment that created it.
It was built over decades.
Looking Ahead
Today, Wienand continues to lead PPS Group while serving as Chairman of TForge, with both businesses operating in sectors being reshaped by technology.
His focus is increasingly on the convergence of security, risk, engineering, technology and artificial intelligence, and on how these disciplines can be used to create safer and more intelligent organisations and infrastructure.
But after 25 years in the UAE, there is also a more personal perspective.
Wienand arrived from South Africa looking to build a career. Instead, he built a life.
The UAE provided the environment in which he could develop professionally, establish businesses, raise a family and continue challenging himself academically and professionally.
And after a quarter of a century, he still regards the country not simply as the place where he works, but as home.
Conclusion
Bruce Wienand’s journey from a young aviation enthusiast to a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist serves as an inspiration. His story exemplifies how passion, hard work, and a commitment to giving back can lead to a fulfilling and impactful life. Do follow him on Instagram.
