Blur bassist Alex James is bringing a full orchestral Britpop show to Adelaide

Blur bassist Alex James is bringing his orchestral Britpop celebration to Australia, with a six-date run set to include Adelaide this November, according to details supplied by promoter Mellen Events.

The show, Britpop Classical, reworks era-defining anthems with a full live orchestra, live band and guest vocalists, turning the swagger of the ’90s into something bigger, richer and built for a theatre-sized singalong.

It is the kind of concept that could have felt like a novelty in lesser hands. Instead, Britpop Classical has already carved out a real audience in the UK, with the official show billing it as a large-scale live experience built around the biggest songs of the era, from Blur and Oasis to Pulp, Supergrass and The Verve.

The production pairs the raw energy of Britpop with sweeping orchestral arrangements, while Alex James leads the charge alongside a rotating lineup of special guests.

Now that nostalgia-fuelled night is heading our way. Adelaide is set to host the South Australian stop on Sunday 8 November at Adelaide Entertainment Centre, with the broader Australian tour also taking in the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, according to the promoter announcement provided. Tickets are scheduled to go on general sale on Friday 24 April at 11am local time, following pre-sales from Wednesday 22 April.

“Somehow all of these songs mean more to people now than they did when they were first released,” says Alex.

“Bringing them back to life with a symphony orchestra, a kick-ass band, some old friends and very special guests have been brilliant – and I absolutely cannot wait to get this show to Australian audiences.”

It is not hard to see why this show is finding an audience again now. Alex James’ official show page describes it as a fusion of the biggest anthems of the era with the scale and emotional punch of a full orchestra, while recent coverage has noted guest appearances and big-screen, big-room staging that push it well beyond a typical rock revival.

For Adelaide fans, it shapes as a rare chance to hear a whole era reframed in one hit. Expect the hooks, the attitude, the singalong moments and a fair bit of emotional whiplash as some of Britpop’s most familiar songs get the symphonic treatment.
