Every monsoon, rising rivers force thousands of families across Bihar to prepare for the same fear: water entering their homes, roads disappearing and entire neighbourhoods being cut off.
Along the Ganga, however, one house has been built for the flood.
As the river rises, the home rises with it.
A home inspired by nature’s challenges
The idea came to Prashant Kumar after witnessing the widespread destruction caused by monsoon floods in Bihar. Trained as an engineer and later drawn to art and sustainable living, he began asking a simple question: What if a house could float when the water levels rise?
The answer became India’s first climate-resilient floating house.
Built beside the Ganga, the three-room structure remains cool and breezy during scorching summers, warm in winter, and buoyant during floods. Designed to work with nature rather than against it, the home represents a practical response to one of the country’s most pressing climate challenges.
Built sustainably, designed for the future
What makes the house remarkable is not just its ability to float, but how it was built. Every material used in its construction was sourced from within a 10-kilometre radius, significantly reducing its environmental footprint.
The three-room home uses local and recycled materials, making it both sustainable and climate-resilient.
Prashant incorporated recycled pipes and eco-friendly bricks made from cow dung, lime, jaggery and rice. The house also features large green lawns, solar panels for electricity generation and a dry toilet system that converts waste into compost. The result is a home that is not only climate-resilient but also carbon negative.
Perhaps most surprisingly, the innovative structure was built at a cost of just Rs 6 lakh.
From one floating house to a floating village
For Prashant, this is only the beginning. He is now working to bring down the construction cost to around Rs 1.5 lakh, making the model more accessible for vulnerable communities.
His larger dream is even more ambitious: creating an entire floating village that can withstand floods while remaining sustainable and self-reliant.
