Sunshine Coast University researchers and beekeepers have discovered a remarkable compound in the glue bees use to seal their homes.

The substance is a mix of plant resin, wax, oils and pollen, and early results have been described as very exciting.

“Hopefully we identify the new antibiotics to treat the infection,” researcher Trong Train said.

It’s hoped the compound can be developed and commercially marketed to heal scarring, injuries and burns.

The potential impact is enormous, researchers say.

“Hypertrophic scarring affects over 100 million people every year worldwide. In underdeveloped countries, there are millions more people who are suffering,” researcher Lisa Randall said.

The breakthrough could be a life-changing alternative to current treatments, which can be long, not commonly available, and come with severe side effects.

“Reducing the pain, the immobility and the psychological distress,” Randall said.

Beekeepers believe the discovery will create a sweet new income stream for their industry.

“This research could really affect the world by turning biodiversity into sustainable opportunities in healthcare,” beekeeper Mariki Visser said.

The research will now move to pre-clinical trials.
