Boston and two other Massachusetts cities landed on the list, along with Rhode Island’s capital.

For the second year in a row, Boston has been named the most collision-prone city in the United States, according to a new report from Allstate.

The insurance company’s 2026 America’s Best Drivers Report ranked the 200 largest U.S. cities based on auto insurance claims data, finding that Boston drivers go an average of just 3.7 years between collisions, which is the shortest span in the nation. The report estimates Boston drivers are nearly 189% more likely to be involved in a crash than the national average.

This higher crash rate leads to higher repair and insurance costs for Boston drivers, according to Allstate.

Two other Massachusetts cities dominated the low end of the rankings. Worcester placed fourth from the bottom, or 197th overall, with drivers averaging about 5.14 years between collisions, while Springfield ranked fifth from the bottom, or 196th, at 5.18 years between crashes.

Providence, Rhode Island, also landed among the nation’s 10 riskiest cities for drivers, ranking 194th overall with an average of 5.87 years between collisions.

Brownsville, Texas, once again claimed the title of the nation’s safest city for drivers, where motorists go nearly 15 years between collisions—almost four times longer than drivers in Boston.

The annual report, now in its 18th year, analyzed Allstate property damage claims filed between January 2023 and December 2024 to compare collision trends in the country’s most populous cities. Rankings were based on how frequently drivers are involved in crashes that result in property damage claims.

The insurer says its policies represent roughly 10 percent of U.S. auto insurance policies, providing what it describes as a “broad snapshot of national driving trends across the country.”

This year’s report also included anonymized data from Allstate’s Drivewise mobile app to highlight behaviors linked to crash risk, such as speeding, hard braking, phone use while driving, and nighttime driving.

The findings revealed that Boston was among the cities with the highest rates of phone use behind the wheel.

Laura Hoffman, Allstate’s vice president of auto design and telematics, said where people drive influences their crash risk, but their driving habits play an equally important role.

“You don’t have to overhaul your driving habits to make a difference,” said Hoffman. “Simple steps like slowing down, staying focused and giving yourself space can go a long way in helping reduce risk.”

A spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation told the Boston Globe that the agency “prioritizes safety across all avenues and works with all municipalities to address road user needs through implementation of systemic safety countermeasures and addressing high crash locations.”
