Alisha Chinai began her singing career with Adventures Of Tarzan (1985). A major turning point came with ‘Made In India’, which made her a household name. Moreover, at a time when music videos were still a novelty in India, ‘Made In India’ was accompanied by a striking video featuring Alisha alongside the dapper Milind Soman. As a result, the song became a rage. As per Wikipedia, “Made In India was the first ever Indian pop album to achieve commercial success on a par with Indian film music albums and it also marked a spectacular beginning to the era of Indian music videos… it also became the first non-film album to break unit sales records in India”. In a conversation with Komal Nahta, Alisha Chinai looked back at this turning point in her life.
Alisha Chinai opens up on ‘Made In India’: “Whoever heard the song said, ‘Either it’ll work or it’ll flop’; adds, “That video caused a REVOLUTION… audience saw the singer singing the song”
When asked if she expected ‘Made In India’ would become such a big hit, she replied, “I didn’t expect it would become a sensation. However, my gut instinct told me that this song was going to be very special. I felt that while recording the track. The way I sang it, I was actually thinking of Noor Jehan. She’s my favourite singer. I was trying to use her inflexion and her harkat. It was a bit high-pitched for me. But Biddu sir said, ‘No, no, you have to sing it’! So, I sang and I told myself, ‘There’s something about this song; it’s special’. Whoever heard the song told us, ‘Either it’ll work, or it’ll flop’!”
She added, “Finally, when the video came out, it blew everyone off. That video caused a revolution. Earlier, when I sang, there were no videos or television. So, it was the first time the audience really saw the singer singing the song. MTV also just came in and the whole pop revolution began as a result. So, the timing was just perfect.”
