Adelaide weather forecast for Saturday May 2 and the days ahead

Adelaide is heading into a wet and windy stretch, with showers, blustery conditions and a drop in temperature set to shape the week ahead after a warmer start on Saturday.

Saturday begins on the mild side across Adelaide, but the change will be hard to miss. Cloud is expected to thicken through the day, with showers likely and the chance of thunderstorms during the morning and afternoon. Temperatures are forecast to reach 26 degrees in the city before north to northeasterly winds swing northwesterly late in the morning, helping push the wet weather across the metro area. Rainfall of 4 to 10mm is possible, making it a day to keep the umbrella close and an eye on conditions if you’re out and about.

That cooler pattern settles in quickly on Sunday, with Adelaide dropping to a top of just 18 degrees under cloudy skies and frequent showers. Northwesterly winds of 25 to 40km/h will add to the chill, especially in exposed spots and along the coast. Monday looks much the same, with another 18-degree maximum, more showers likely through the morning and afternoon, and winds shifting from west to northwesterly before turning southwesterly later in the day.

By Tuesday, the city starts to edge towards a slightly calmer setup, though it won’t be completely dry. A possible morning shower remains on the cards, with light winds developing through the afternoon and temperatures holding at 18 degrees after an overnight low of 11. Wednesday then brings another unsettled turn, with a high chance of showers and a top of 19 degrees as winds move from northwest to northeasterly before shifting west to southwesterly during the day.

The coolest day of the run is expected on Thursday, with Adelaide forecast to reach just 15 degrees under cloudy skies and a medium chance of showers, most likely during the morning. Southerly winds of 15 to 25km/h will keep things feeling brisk. Friday stays cool and cloudy too, with a medium chance of showers and a top of 17 degrees, rounding out a week that looks much more like a firm step into late autumn than a lingering taste of warm weather.

Across regional South Australia, the weekend front is set to bring the biggest change. Patchy rain and possible gusty thunderstorms are moving from the west across the state today, reaching eastern districts by the afternoon. While northern and eastern parts start off warmer than average, cooler air will spread in behind the change.

Through Sunday and Monday, showers are expected across the southern agricultural area and West Coast district, with isolated light showers extending into the northern agricultural districts and possibly the south of the pastoral districts.

There is also a chance of thunderstorms near western and southern coasts. Rainfall totals to the end of Tuesday are expected to be heaviest across the southern agricultural area, West Coast district, parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges and coastal fringes, where 15 to 30mm is possible in some spots. Further north, inland flooding remains a serious concern, with elevated river and creek levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka. Many roads and access tracks are impacted by flooding, and travellers are being urged to check conditions before setting out.

A Strong Wind Warning is in place for Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, Far West Coast, Upper West Coast, Lower West Coast, Central Coast, South Central Coast, Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, Investigator Strait, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast.

A second Strong Wind Warning is also current for Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, Lower West Coast, Central Coast, South Central Coast, Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, Investigator Strait, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast.

A Flood Warning remains in place for the Inland Rivers of South Australia, with elevated river levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha. Elevated creek levels are also continuing along the Lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka.
